Why golf in Northwest Ireland
The northwest is where Irish links golf is at its rawest and least crowded. The famous courses of the southwest, Ballybunion, Lahinch and Waterville, draw the crowds and the high green fees, but the links strung along the Atlantic from Sligo through Mayo to the far tip of Donegal are every bit as good and a fraction of the fuss. County Sligo at Rosses Point, a Harry Colt design from 1927 beneath the table mountain of Benbulben, has hosted the West of Ireland Amateur for nearly a century. Carne at Belmullet, Eddie Hackett's final and many say finest work, tumbles through some of the biggest dunes in the game. Ballyliffin's Glashedy Links, the northernmost course in the country, staged the 2018 Irish Open.
This is golf for the traveller who wants the dunes, the wind and the welcome without the wait for a tee time. The courses sit among spectacular, empty coastline, the green fees are honest, and the trip can be built as a single coastal run from Sligo north into Donegal or paired with a leg in the southwest or the famous links of the north. Bring your weather gear and a sense of adventure: the rewards here are among the most memorable rounds in Ireland, and you will often have the place close to yourself.
The regions
County Sligo
The gateway to the northwest, with the championship links of Rosses Point beneath Benbulben, the dunes of Enniscrone on Killala Bay and the small links at Strandhill, the easiest base for a first trip to the region.
County Mayo
Remote and spectacular, home to Carne at Belmullet, the final design of Eddie Hackett through enormous dunes on the Mullet peninsula, one of the great wild links experiences in the game and worth the long drive west.
County Donegal
The far northwest, with the championship dunes of Ballyliffin on the Inishowen peninsula, the long links of Donegal at Murvagh, the historic resort at Rosapenna and the hidden gem at Narin and Portnoo, the richest cluster in the region.
The courses that matter
County Sligo, Rosses Point
The benchmark of the northwest and one of the great links in Ireland, a Harry Colt design beneath the table mountain of Benbulben that has hosted the West of Ireland Amateur for nearly a century, with past winners including Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington.
Carne Golf Links
The final design of the great Irish architect Eddie Hackett, twenty seven holes routed through some of the biggest sandhills in golf on the remote Mullet peninsula, a wild, thrilling and unforgettable links many rate the equal of the famous names in the south.
Ballyliffin, Glashedy Links
The host of the 2018 Irish Open and the northernmost course in the country, a Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock design on the Inishowen peninsula with penal bunkering, dramatic dunes and the Glashedy rock offshore, a genuine championship test.
Enniscrone Golf Club
A soaring links on Killala Bay, founded in 1918 and transformed when Donald Steel routed new holes through the towering sandhills in the early 2000s, a big, dramatic course with moody mountain backdrops and one of the best dune stretches in the country.
Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh
An expansive Eddie Hackett links on the lonely Murvagh peninsula south of Donegal town, a long and demanding course of open dunes and coastal grasses that asks for both length and accuracy, with the famous par 3 Valley of Tears early in the round.
Rosapenna
A historic links resort on the Donegal coast with championship golf among the dunes, including the modern Sandy Hills links and the celebrated new St Patrick's Links, a destination in its own right and the anchor of a northern Donegal trip.
Narin and Portnoo
A long underrated links on a beautiful stretch of Donegal coast, recently restored and now widely regarded as one of the finest natural links in the region, a hidden gem that rewards the golfer willing to seek it out.
Strandhill
A characterful links on the Sligo coast beneath Knocknarea, a compact, sporty course among the dunes that makes an excellent companion round to Rosses Point a short drive away.

When to go

| April and October | Cooler and breezier, firm running golf, quieter courses | The value sweet spot for keen links golfers |
| November to March | Wet, windy and short on daylight | For the hardy only, many clubs on winter greens |
The Atlantic wind blows here year round, so pack for it whatever the month. The links are firmest and the days longest in high summer.

Getting there and around
The northwest rewards a road trip. Knock Ireland West airport is the handiest gateway for Sligo and Mayo, within about an hour of Rosses Point and Enniscrone, while the City of Derry airport and Belfast serve the Donegal links to the north, with Ballyliffin around forty five minutes from Derry. Dublin is roughly two and a half to three hours from Sligo by car and a popular fly in point for a longer Irish trip. A hire car is essential here: the courses are spread along a wild coast, Carne in particular is a long and beautiful drive out onto the Mullet peninsula, and the joy of the region is linking the rounds together at your own pace.
Where to stay
Base the trip around the clusters. Sligo town makes a lively, central base for Rosses Point, Strandhill and a run out to Enniscrone, with good hotels and restaurants close to hand. For Carne, the town of Belmullet keeps the great links on the doorstep on a remote and memorable leg. In Donegal, the links resort at Rosapenna lets you stay and play among the dunes, while Donegal town suits Murvagh and the Inishowen hotels around Ballyliffin anchor the far north. Book ahead for the summer, when the region's modest hotel stock fills fast.
