Golf in Fife
The Kingdom of Fife is where golf began, and no stretch of coast in the world holds more meaning for the game. St Andrews and its Old Course are the heart of it, but the whole peninsula is a links wonderland, from Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie to the ancient charms of the East Neuk. This is the original golf pilgrimage.

Why golf here
Golf has been played at St Andrews since the fifteenth century, and the Old Course is the template from which the whole game grew, the double greens, the road hole, the rumpled fairways and the very idea of a links. To walk its closing stretch over the Swilcan Bridge is the defining experience of golf travel, and the wider St Andrews Links Trust offers six more public courses on the doorstep, the New, the Jubilee, the Eden, the Strathtyrum, the little Balgove and the clifftop Castle Course, the busiest golf complex in Europe.
But Fife is far more than St Andrews. A few minutes south the modern masterpiece of Kingsbarns tumbles spectacularly along the North Sea, and the newer Dumbarnie Links has joined the world's best in a few short years. Round the coast lie the timeless East Neuk links, Crail's two courses including the ninth oldest club in the world, the quirky charm of Elie, and the classic pair at Lundin and Leven, with heathland Ladybank inland. You can play a fortnight of genuinely great golf here without driving more than half an hour, which is why Fife sits at the top of every serious golfer's list.

The Fife courses to build around
From the spiritual home of the game to two of the finest modern links in Britain and a string of ancient East Neuk gems, these are the rounds to plan a Fife trip around, all within a short drive of St Andrews.
St Andrews, Old Course
The most famous course in the world and the one every golfer dreams of playing. Public, ancient and astonishing, the Old Course is a links of double greens, hidden bunkers and the immortal closing holes over the Swilcan Bridge and the Road Hole. Tee times come by ballot and advance booking, so plan months ahead. The defining round of any golf life.
Kingsbarns
A modern masterpiece a short drive south of St Andrews, where Kyle Phillips conjured a links that looks centuries old from former farmland on a curving stretch of the North Sea coast. Every hole sees the sea, the conditioning is immaculate and the setting is sublime. A regular Dunhill Links venue and, at the top of the Fife fee scale, worth every penny.
Dumbarnie Links
The newest of the great Fife links, opened in 2020 to immediate acclaim on a rolling site above Largo Bay. Clive Clark's design gives big, generous fairways, wide sea views and a bold, playable layout that has shot up the rankings. An easy, enjoyable companion to the more demanding classics, and one of the best new courses in Scotland this century.
St Andrews, New and Jubilee
The two championship courses alongside the Old, and far easier to book. The New Course, laid out in 1895, is regarded by many locals as a sterner test than the Old itself, while the Jubilee is the toughest of the trust's links. Both are pure St Andrews golf at a fraction of the Old Course fee, and essential rounds on any town based trip.
Crail, Balcomie and Craighead
The Crail Golfing Society is the seventh oldest golf club in the world, and its two links sit on a glorious headland in the East Neuk. The Balcomie, laid out by Old Tom Morris, is a short, charming clifftop course of huge character, while the modern Craighead by Gil Hanse adds length and drama. Wonderful, well priced golf with the sea on every side.
Elie, Lundin and Leven
The classic East Neuk trio, all within a few minutes of one another along the Largo Bay shore. The Golf House Club at Elie is a quirky, blind shot delight where James Braid learned the game, while neighbouring Lundin and Leven share a venerable links heritage and host Open final qualifying. Traditional, friendly and superb value, they are the soul of Fife golf away from the crowds.

Golf in Fife: common questions
What are the best golf courses in Fife?
The St Andrews Old Course is the spiritual home of golf and the headline round, with Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie Links the two outstanding modern links nearby. The wider St Andrews Links courses, the New, Jubilee and Castle, plus Crail's two links and the classic East Neuk courses at Elie, Lundin and Leven complete a world class cluster, all within a short drive on the Fife coast.
How do you get a tee time on the Old Course at St Andrews?
Tee times on the Old Course are allocated by advance ballot and an annual advance booking release, or you can enter the daily ballot in person two days ahead, where a portion of tee times are drawn. Singles can also queue as a walk on. Demand is enormous, so most visitors secure a round through the advance booking, a guaranteed tee time package or a golf tour operator. Always plan well ahead and confirm directly.
How much are green fees in Fife in 2026?
Indicative 2026 summer green fees run from around 30 pounds on the small St Andrews courses such as Balgove and Strathtyrum, to about 110 to 160 pounds at Ladybank, Lundin, Elie and Crail, up to 340 pounds on the St Andrews Old Course and around 448 pounds at Kingsbarns at the top. Shoulder season and winter rates are far lower. Always confirm directly before booking.
When is the best time to play golf in Fife?
May to September gives the firmest links turf and the longest daylight, and is peak season for both demand and price. Spring and early autumn are quieter and a little cheaper with fine conditions, while the Old Course is closed to play on Sundays. Book the marquee rounds months ahead in any season. Always confirm conditions before you travel.
How do you get to Fife for golf?
Fly into Edinburgh, about ninety minutes from St Andrews by road, or Dundee, which is closer. A hire car is the easiest way to reach the spread of links along the coast, though St Andrews itself is walkable and many courses cluster within a short drive of the town. The East Neuk villages and Kingsbarns are all within twenty to thirty minutes of St Andrews.
