Why golf in Barbados
Barbados is the grand dame of Caribbean golf. While other islands have a course or two, Barbados has built a genuine golf scene on its west coast, the so called platinum coast, where some of the most famous designers in the game have left their mark within a few miles of one another. The two anchors are Sandy Lane, with three Tom Fazio courses including the extraordinary Green Monkey carved from a coral quarry, and Royal Westmoreland, a Robert Trent Jones Jr course at the heart of a luxury villa estate. Add the reborn Apes Hill in the island's green interior and you have enough first class golf to fill a week.
The golf comes wrapped in one of the most polished luxury destinations anywhere. The west coast beaches are calm and golden, the dining is excellent, the villas and resorts are world class, and the island is small, safe and easy to get around. For golfers from Britain and North America it is also one of the simplest long haul winter escapes, with direct flights and a dry, sunny season that runs exactly opposite to the cold and dark of home.
The areas
The platinum west coast
The luxury heart of the island around Holetown and St James, home to Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland, the calm Caribbean beaches and the best hotels, villas and restaurants. Where almost every golf trip is based.
The interior
The green, hilly center of the island holds the reborn Apes Hill, a short drive up from the coast, cooler and more dramatic than the seaside courses, with long views across the cane fields to both coasts.
The south coast
The livelier, more affordable south around Christ Church and St Lawrence Gap is the value base, a short transfer from the west coast courses with a wider range of restaurants and nightlife.
The courses that matter
The Green Monkey at Sandy Lane
A spectacular Tom Fazio course carved from an old coral stone quarry, the most exclusive round in the Caribbean, reserved largely for Sandy Lane guests and members with famously high access rates.
Sandy Lane, Country Club
The Tom Fazio championship course open to non residents, the venue for the 2006 World Golf Championship match play, a polished, rolling layout with sea views and a cart included with play.
Royal Westmoreland
A 7,045 yard, par 72 Robert Trent Jones Jr course at the center of a famous villa estate above the west coast, with elevated tees, coral outcrops and views to the sea. Visiting tee times are limited, so book ahead.
Apes Hill Golf Club
The reborn championship course in the cool green interior, transformed with waterfront holes and a closing hole inspired by the island green at TPC Sawgrass, access reserved for members and villa guests.
Sandy Lane, Old Nine
The original nine hole course at Sandy Lane, mature and tree lined, the gentle, lower cost option for a relaxed afternoon round or for golfers who want a quicker game between beach days.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| December to April | Dry, sunny, lighter trade winds, lower humidity | Prime season, the ideal Northern winter escape |
| May and November | Warm, a little more humid, occasional showers | Good value shoulder months either side of peak |
| June to October | Hot, humid, the Atlantic hurricane season | The cheapest golf, with a weather eye on storms |
Barbados sits at the eastern edge of the Caribbean and is less storm prone than islands further west, but the dry winter season is still the time to plan a golf trip.

Getting there and around
Barbados is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach, with direct flights from London, several North American cities and regional Caribbean hubs into Grantley Adams airport in the south. The west coast courses are around thirty to forty five minutes from the airport. The island is small enough that everything is within an easy drive, and most golfers use a hire car or pre booked transfers and taxis rather than navigating themselves, leaving the driving to someone who knows the narrow coast road.
Where to stay
The west coast is the golf base. Sandy Lane is the grand resort, with its three courses on the doorstep, while Royal Westmoreland offers villa living on the estate itself, ideal for a group that wants space, a pool and golf out the back. Beyond the two golf names, the platinum coast has a deep choice of luxury hotels and rental villas around Holetown. For a livelier and more affordable trip, base on the south coast and transfer up to the courses. Let one planner match the villa or resort to the group and line up the tee times.

Can you play the Green Monkey at Sandy Lane?
The Green Monkey, the Tom Fazio course carved from an old coral quarry, is reserved primarily for hotel guests and members, and access is tightly controlled with very high indicative rates for non residents. Most visiting golfers instead play the Sandy Lane Country Club course, also a Tom Fazio design, or Royal Westmoreland nearby. Always confirm access directly before booking.
