Why golf in Auckland

Most golf trips to New Zealand begin in Auckland, and the city is far more than a transit point. Its headline round is Titirangi, the only course Alister MacKenzie laid out in the country, a compact, beautifully bunkered parkland on the western fringe that carries the same strategic DNA as Augusta National and Royal Melbourne. Barely twenty minutes from both the airport and the centre, it is a round any serious golfer should build a visit around, and a reminder that the great Australian and New Zealand work of golf's most famous architect reaches all the way to the North Island.

Around Titirangi sits a city with real depth and variety. Gulf Harbour gives you a Robert Trent Jones Jr course on the dramatic clifftops of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, the merged Royal Auckland and Grange offers 27 holes of championship parkland reworked by Nicklaus Design, and Remuera provides a polished members test close to the centre. Add the windblown coastal golf at Muriwai on the black sand west coast, the modern, tournament tested Windross Farm and the resort courses on the eastern bays, and Auckland easily fills several days before a group heads south to the marquee links at Tara Iti, Cape Kidnappers and beyond.

The areas

The city and isthmus

The heart of Auckland golf, close to the centre and the harbour. Titirangi on the western edge, Remuera in its graceful woodland, and the historic Maungakiekie and Akarana clubs near One Tree Hill, all within easy reach of a central base and the city's restaurants and waterfront.

The North Shore and Hibiscus Coast

North across the harbour bridge to the parkland at Pupuke and, further out on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, the clifftop spectacle of Gulf Harbour. West toward the Tasman the rugged links style course at Muriwai sits above the black sand surf beaches.

South and east Auckland

The championship belt, with the 27 hole Royal Auckland and Grange at Papatoetoe, the modern Windross Farm at Ardmore, and the resort and coastal courses at Formosa, Whitford Park and Clarks Beach along the eastern bays and the Manukau shore, all an easy run from the airport.

Getting there and around

Auckland Airport, code AKL, is New Zealand's main international gateway, with direct routes from Australia, Asia, North America and the Middle East, and it sits south of the city close to several courses. Titirangi is barely twenty minutes from the terminal, and the southern and eastern courses at Royal Auckland and Grange, Windross Farm, Formosa and Whitford Park are an easy run. North of the harbour bridge, Gulf Harbour lies about an hour out on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. A hire car is the practical way to link the courses, which spread from the North Shore to the Manukau shore, and Auckland is the natural launch pad for the wider New Zealand links to the north and south.

Where to stay

For a pure golf trip, base centrally near the harbour and the waterfront, within easy reach of Titirangi, Remuera and the city courses and the best of Auckland's dining. For an eastern bays stay with golf on the doorstep, the resort at Formosa puts a cliff top course and lodging in one place, while a night or two near Gulf Harbour suits the northern leg. Most groups treat Auckland as the front end of a wider New Zealand trip, so build the city rounds first, then push north to Tara Iti and the Bay of Islands or fly south to Hawke's Bay and Queenstown. Book the marquee club rounds and the lodging together for the summer peak.

Auckland golf questions

What are the best golf courses in Auckland?

Titirangi Golf Club, the only Alister MacKenzie design in New Zealand, is the headline course, a refined parkland par 71 minutes from the city. Gulf Harbour, Robert Trent Jones Jr's clifftop course on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, is the most scenic, and the 27 hole Royal Auckland and Grange, reworked by Nicklaus Design, the strongest championship test. Remuera, Formosa and Muriwai round out a varied city with golf for every taste.

When is the best time to play golf in Auckland?

Auckland plays year round in a mild subtropical climate, but the prime window runs from November to April, through the warm, settled New Zealand summer and into autumn. Midsummer from December to February is the warmest and busiest, while the shoulder months of spring and autumn offer comfortable golf and good value. Winters are mild but wetter, so the firmest, driest conditions come in late summer.

Can visitors play Titirangi and Auckland's best courses?

Yes, with planning. Titirangi welcomes visitors at set times, often midweek and best arranged in advance or through a member or operator, and the same applies to Royal Auckland and Grange and Remuera. The resort and public courses, Gulf Harbour, Formosa, Muriwai and Windross Farm, are more openly bookable. A golf trip to Auckland is best arranged ahead so the marquee rounds are secured. Always confirm access and fees directly before booking.

How do you get to Auckland for golf?

Auckland Airport, code AKL, is New Zealand's main international gateway and sits south of the city near several courses. Titirangi is barely twenty minutes from both the airport and the centre, while Gulf Harbour lies north on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and Formosa and Windross Farm to the south east. A hire car is the practical way to link the courses, which spread from the North Shore to the southern and eastern fringes of the region.
