How we chose

How we ranked the best Auckland golf courses

Auckland sprawls across two harbors and a string of peninsulas, and its golf is spread the same way, from a Mackenzie gem in the western suburbs to a clifftop championship course an hour north. We weigh the quality of the design and the conditioning first, then the course's pedigree and its place in New Zealand golf history, and finally how memorable and enjoyable the round actually is. The verdicts are ours. Several of the best are private, so we have flagged access plainly and finished with the plays a visiting golfer can realistically book.

This is mostly classic parkland golf, mature and tree lined, shaped by a maritime climate that keeps it green and playable almost all year. The headline names are international: Alister Mackenzie laid out Titirangi in the 1920s, and Robert Trent Jones Junior built Gulf Harbour for the 1998 World Cup of Golf. Around them sit a group of long established members' clubs and resort courses that make Auckland a genuinely rewarding city to plan a few rounds around, often as the first or last stop on a wider New Zealand golf trip.

The ranking

The seven best golf courses in Auckland

From Mackenzie's strategic Titirangi to the clifftop drama of Gulf Harbour and the best public plays, ranked with our verdicts and the access you need to know.

01

Titirangi Golf Club

New Lynn · Alister Mackenzie · private

The connoisseur's pick and New Zealand's only Alister Mackenzie design, laid out by the architect of Augusta National and Cypress Point during his 1920s visit to the southern hemisphere. A clever, strategic par 71 routed through native bush in the western suburbs, just twenty minutes from both the city and the airport, with the bold green contours and tempting angles that are the Mackenzie signature. Private, historic and a must for the design minded golfer.

02

Gulf Harbour Country Club

Whangaparaoa · Robert Trent Jones Jr, 1997 · resort

Auckland's big championship course, a Robert Trent Jones Junior design opened in 1997 on the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula that hosted the 1998 World Cup of Golf, won by England's Nick Faldo and David Carter. Dramatic elevation changes and a back nine that runs along the cliffs with panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf. The most accessible of the region's championship courses for a visiting golfer, and the most scenic.

03

Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club

Otahuhu · championship parkland · private

The result of a 2015 merger of two of the city's oldest clubs, Royal Auckland and Grange now plays as a reconfigured thirty six hole property and one of the leading championship venues in the country, a regular host of national events. Mature, well bunkered parkland that demands ball striking and rewards a complete game. Private and serious, the course the city's best players measure themselves against.

04

Remuera Golf Club

Remuera · parkland · private

The closest top course to the CBD, a handsome, undulating parkland in the leafy eastern suburb of Remuera that is one of Auckland's most popular and well kept clubs. Hilly enough to test the legs and the strategy, with quick greens and a strong set of par 4s. Private and busy with members, but a visitor playing as a guest gets a genuine slice of established Auckland club golf minutes from town.

05

Formosa Golf Resort

Beachlands · resort · visitor friendly

A resort course on the coast at Beachlands, around forty minutes east of downtown, with sweeping views over the Hauraki Gulf and the islands beyond from its elevated holes. The rolling, sometimes demanding layout is wrapped in farmland and sea air, and as a resort it welcomes visitors and stay and play guests without the private club barrier. The easy, scenic pick for a relaxed round near the city you can simply book.

06

Whitford Park Country Club

Whitford · parkland · semi private

A mature parkland club in the rural fringe east of Auckland near Whitford, long a favorite of the city's golfers for its conditioning, its tree lined avenues and its relaxed country feel. Less famous than the championship names but a thoroughly enjoyable and well presented round, and more open to visitors than the leading private clubs. A solid addition to an Auckland golfing itinerary away from the crowds.

07

The best public plays

Auckland · public · book ahead

Since several of the elite courses are private, this is where visitors get easy, affordable golf. Chamberlain Park, the central municipal course, is the most convenient, while Pupuke on the North Shore and Akarana near One Tree Hill give a good, walkable round close to town. None are championship tests, but all are honest, friendly and cheap, and they are the rounds we send visiting golfers to book when a private tee time is not on the cards.

Costs and access

Access, the season and what it costs

The honest picture in Auckland is that the very best courses, Titirangi, Royal Auckland and Grange and Remuera, are private members' clubs, played as a guest or by prior arrangement. That is no barrier to a great golf trip here, though, because Gulf Harbour and Formosa are genuine resort courses that welcome visitors, and the public golf is plentiful. The maritime climate means golf almost all year, with the best conditions from November to April through the New Zealand spring and summer, and a wetter but still playable winter.
