Quail Hollow Club

George Cobb laid out Quail Hollow in 1961 and Tom Fazio rebuilt it across a generation of projects into one of America's premier championship tests. A private par 71 of about 7,626 yards in Charlotte, it hosts the PGA Tour's Carolinas stop, the 2017 and 2025 PGA Championships and the 2022 Presidents Cup, and it ends with the famous Green Mile.

The verdict

Quail Hollow began as a George Cobb design on former dairy farmland southeast of uptown Charlotte, opening in 1961. Its modern reputation, though, was built by Tom Fazio, who reworked the course across projects in 1997, 2003 and again from 2014 to 2016, lengthening it, rebuilding greens and reshaping holes until it could test the best players in the world. The result is a long, muscular, tree lined parkland course that has become a staple of the professional calendar and a repeat major venue.

Our verdict: this is big time tournament golf, demanding length, nerve and a complete game, and it saves its hardest examination for last. The closing three holes, known to players and broadcasters as the Green Mile, rank among the toughest finishes in championship golf. It is a private members club rather than a stop you can simply book, so it features on a Charlotte trip as the marquee round to arrange through a member. The holes worth the trip

Quail Hollow asks for length and discipline from the first tee. Fazio's reworking stretched the course beyond 7,600 yards and lined the corridors with mature hardwoods and water, so a long, accurate drive is the price of entry and the par 4s in particular reward the player who can carry the ball and hold the fairway. The greens are large, firm and subtly contoured, putting a premium on the long iron and mid iron approach.

The round builds toward its famous climax. The Green Mile, holes 16 through 18, gathers water, length and pressure into the most feared finish on the PGA Tour: a long par 4 over water at 16, a brutish par 3 to a peninsula green at 17, and a sweeping par 4 along a creek at 18. More than one tournament has turned on those three holes, and they define the course as much as any single stretch in American golf.

It is a venue built for the highest level of play yet enjoyable for the strong amateur who relishes a championship test. On a Carolinas trip it is the headline private round, naturally paired with the Sandhills classics a couple of hours east at Pinehurst and the bold sandscapes of Tobacco Road.
