Pumpkin Ridge Witch Hollow
Bob Cupp designed Witch Hollow, the private course at Pumpkin Ridge, opening in 1992 in the wooded farmland west of Portland. A par 72 of about 7,017 yards, it staged Tiger Woods' historic third straight US Amateur in 1996 and two US Women's Opens, and remains one of the Pacific Northwest's championship benchmarks.

The verdict
Bob Cupp built Witch Hollow in 1992 as the championship half of Pumpkin Ridge, a 36 hole complex carved from rolling woodland and old nursery ground near North Plains. Where the club's Ghost Creek course is public, Witch Hollow is the private one, and it earned its reputation fast: in 1996 a teenage Tiger Woods won his record third consecutive US Amateur here, and the US Women's Open followed in 1997 and 2003. This is golf with genuine history written into it.
Our verdict: a serious, traditional parkland test that rewards length and nerve, with mature trees, wetlands and water framing demanding tee shots and exacting approaches. The Oregon turf runs lush and the greens hold a well struck iron, but the better player must drive it straight and long to score. For the traveling golfer it is the trophy round of the Portland area, paired naturally with the region's resort golf. For the wider picture, see our guide to golf in Oregon.

The holes worth the trip
Witch Hollow asks for control off the tee from the first swing. Cupp routed the course through corridors of fir and oak with wetlands pinching landing areas, so the player who finds the fairway is rewarded and the one who sprays it is quickly in trouble. Length helps, but position is the currency here.
The par 4s are the backbone, several of them long two shotters that demand a committed drive and a long, accurate iron into greens guarded by sand and water. The short holes vary in length and angle and call for precise distance control, while the par 5s tempt the longer hitter to take on carries that can yield a birdie or a bogey in equal measure.
The closing stretch is where championships turned, and it still gathers tension, asking for two clean swings and a calm putting stroke on greens that quicken as the day dries. Witch Hollow is a test of complete golf, the kind of course you remember hole by hole. Pair a Portland visit with the high desert resort golf around Bend, such as the Pronghorn Nicklaus Course.

Where to stay nearby
Most visiting golfers base in Portland or the western suburbs of Hillsboro and Beaverton, all within a short drive of North Plains, with a full range of hotels, dining and the city's well known food and drink scene close at hand. The setting is rural and quiet, yet the airport and the city are only half an hour away.
Oregon rewards a wider golf trip, and the obvious move is to add the high desert. Pair a Portland round with the resort courses around Bend, two and a half hours southeast, taking in Tetherow and Pronghorn for a varied week of Pacific Northwest golf.
