The verdict

Oak Hill is a name that runs through the modern history of championship golf. Donald Ross laid out the East Course on rolling ground in Pittsford, just outside Rochester, and it opened in 1926, a classic tree framed parkland of demanding par 4s and small, firm greens. Over the decades the membership planted thousands of trees and the course grew dark and narrow, the original Ross openness lost, until Andrew Green's restoration in 2019 and 2020 cleared the clutter, rebuilt the greens and returned the East to something much closer to what Ross drew.

For the 2023 PGA Championship it played as a par 70 of about 7,394 yards, and the renovated course was widely praised: more strategic off the tee, more interesting around the greens and far truer to its roots. The roll of honor is extraordinary, with US Opens, PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup all decided here, the kind of pedigree only a handful of American courses can claim. Oak Hill is private and serious about its golf, so for a traveling player it is reached through a member, but it is a genuine cathedral of the game and a course every student of championship history wants to walk.

The 18th, played up to a green beneath the clubhouse, is one of the hardest finishing holes in major championship golf and has decided more than one title.

The Green restoration widened the corridors, recovered lost short grass around the putting surfaces and brought back the strategic options that decades of tree planting had erased, so the player now has to think off the tee rather than simply hit it straight down a chute.
