Blackwolf Run River

Pete Dye's River Course at Blackwolf Run is the wilder, more dramatic half of Kohler's inland golf, a par 72 of 7,404 yards that hunts the Sheboygan River across hole after hole and has twice tested the best women in the world at the US Open.

The verdict

Before Whistling Straits made Kohler a household name, Pete Dye built Blackwolf Run, and the River Course is still the connoisseur's choice of the resort's four eighteens. Carved along the Sheboygan River through wooded glacial terrain, it has water in play on the majority of its holes, with bold Dye contouring, fingered bunkers and greens that fall away from the careless approach. It opened in its split form in 1990, the more spectacular half of an original layout that the Kohler Company expanded into the River and Meadow Valleys courses.

It is a serious examination, with a championship rating north of 76 and a slope around 151 from the tips, yet it is also one of the most beautiful inland rounds in America, all river bends, native grasses and fall color. Twice the United States Women's Open came here, in 1998 for Se Ri Pak's epic playoff and again in 2012, both contested over a composite of the River and Meadow Valleys. Pair it with the ocean drama of the Straits and you have one of the great two stop golf trips in the country.

The holes worth the trip

The River Course is defined by its relationship with the water. The Sheboygan River and its tributaries thread through the routing, so club selection and the brave or cautious line off the tee shape the round more than raw length. Dye's greens are the second defense, perched, tilted and quick, repelling the approach that is even slightly off, which is why the course plays so much harder than the card suggests.

The closing stretch is the championship heart, a run of holes along the river where the 1998 and 2012 US Women's Opens were decided. The par 5s tempt with reachable second shots over water, the par 3s demand a precise carry to shallow targets, and the home holes ask for two or three of your best swings of the day with the river always waiting. It is the kind of finish that rewards nerve and punishes the loose shot, exactly as a Pete Dye design should.

Played in early autumn, when the Wisconsin hardwoods turn and the morning mist lifts off the river, the River Course is as scenic as inland American golf gets. Walk it with a caddie if you can, take the lines the looper gives you, and treat every hole near the water with respect.

Where to stay nearby

The natural base is the resort itself. The American Club in Kohler is the five star anchor of Destination Kohler, a short drive from both Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits, with the Inn on Woodlake a more relaxed option on the same estate. Staying on property is also the surest way to lock in the tee times that matter, since stay and play packages get priority on the prime dates.

On a golf heavy trip the smart move is to combine the resort's two sites: two rounds inland at Blackwolf Run on the River and Meadow Valleys, and two on the lakefront at the Straits and Irish. Our golf in Wisconsin guide lays out the combinations and the best windows to play them.
