Course profile · Campoamor, Costa Blanca, Alicante, Spain

Las Colinas

Las Colinas is the modern jewel of the southern Costa Blanca, a Cabell Robinson design that opened in 2010 in a private valley of Mediterranean woodland near Campoamor. A par 71 routed through pine clad hills and around six lakes, with not a single neighbouring fairway in view, it offers some of the most secluded and stylish resort golf in Spain.

The verdict

Las Colinas is what a great deal of modern Spanish resort golf aspires to be. Cabell Robinson, the architect behind some of the finest courses in southern Europe, was given a private valley near Campoamor on the southern Costa Blanca and routed a par 71 through it that opened in 2010, each hole carved in isolation through pine, holm oak and rolling terrain so that you rarely see another fairway. It is consistently rated among the best courses on the Costa Blanca and in Spain.

It suits the golfer who wants polish, peace and a genuine test in a beautiful Mediterranean setting. The conditioning is excellent, the design is strategic rather than tricked up, and the surrounding resort of villas, a beach club and good dining makes it an easy place to settle for a few days. Paired with the other quality courses of the southern Costa Blanca, it anchors a stylish, sun soaked golf trip.

The holes worth the trip

The great strength of Las Colinas is its sense of seclusion. Robinson used the natural folds of the valley to give every hole its own private corridor through the woodland, so the round feels like a tour of eighteen separate, quiet amphitheatres rather than a busy resort layout. The fairways are generous off the tee but ask for thought on the approach, where water, elevation change and well placed bunkering protect the greens.

The six lakes come into play on several holes and frame some of the most memorable moments, with the closing stretch demanding accurate, committed shots to hold the greens. The conditioning is a highlight, the bent and bermuda surfaces running true and fast in the dry Mediterranean climate, rewarding the player who controls trajectory and spin.

It is a course that gives back what you bring to it, fair and playable from the forward tees yet a real examination from the back, and beautiful in the warm low light of a Costa Blanca evening. A round here is the centrepiece of the southern Costa Blanca golf scene.

The most convenient base is the Las Colinas resort itself, with villas and apartments set in the same valley as the golf, a beach club on the coast and good on site dining, which makes for a relaxed stay and play trip. The southern Costa Blanca towns of Campoamor, Cabo Roig and Torrevieja are close by with hotels, restaurants and beaches.

The southern Costa Blanca and the neighbouring Murcia coast are packed with quality courses, so Las Colinas pairs easily into a wider golf trip across the region. It is an ideal anchor for a winter sun golf break in southeast Spain.
