The verdict
Mar Menor is one of the cluster of courses built around Murcia in the mid 2000s, now run under the GNK Golf banner, that put the region firmly on the European golf map. The front nine, originally shaped by Dave Thomas, asks for accurate approach play into greens well guarded by bunkering, while the back nine, a Nicklaus Design layout, opens up with wider fairways that invite a more aggressive line.
The signature comes at the three holes that wrap around the resort lake, a stretch often compared to a Murcian version of an Amen Corner, where water dominates the strategy and the cards are won and lost. With sunshine close to guaranteed and green fees that remain remarkable value, Mar Menor is an easy and enjoyable centerpiece for a Costa Cálida golf week.

The holes worth the trip
The two nines have distinct characters. The Dave Thomas front nine is the tighter and more demanding half, asking for precise iron play into well bunkered greens, with minimal rough that nonetheless leaves little margin around the putting surfaces.
The Nicklaus Design back nine is the more expansive and dramatic, widening out to reward the bigger hitter before the round turns to the water. The lake holes at 13, 14 and 15 are the heart of the course, where the resort water forms the backdrop and a brave line over the corner can pay off handsomely.
It is golf built to be enjoyed by visiting golfers of every standard, generous enough to keep the round moving and pointed enough at the business end to make the finish memorable. The value, the sunshine and the Nicklaus pedigree make it a fixture of the Murcia circuit.
