Golf Maioris

The verdict

Golf Maioris is the big swinging member of southern Mallorca's golf scene. Opened in 2006 and designed by R.S. Group, it sits on the Cap Blanc road near Llucmajor, roughly 15 minutes from Palma and its airport, which makes it one of the easiest tee times to reach on the whole island. It is a championship length test laid out across Mediterranean scrub, pine forest and pockets of marshland, with a clear identity: give the player room off the tee, then make them earn their score on the green.

Playing to a par 72 of about 6,347 meters from the back, Maioris is generous where most resort courses are tight. The fairways here are reckoned to be the widest on Mallorca, an invitation for the bigger hitter to take the driver out and let it go without the fear of losing a sleeve of balls. The defense is saved for the putting surfaces, which are well bunkered and contoured, so accuracy with the approach and a confident short game matter more than perfect driving. For a golf trip it is a satisfying, low stress day that still rewards good iron play.

The holes worth the trip

Water is the signature at Maioris, and it announces itself twice in the most memorable way the architect knew. The par 5 fourth plays to an island green, a true risk and reward proposition where the long hitter weighs going for it in two against the lake that wraps the putting surface. Later, the par 3 thirteenth repeats the trick on a shorter scale, a one shotter to a green ringed by water that turns a routine par into a moment of nerve. Away from the island greens, four lakes thread through the layout to add strategy without making the course feel cramped. The broad fairways mean most holes give the tee shot plenty of margin, so the questions come on the second and third shots, where pin position and green contour decide whether you are putting for birdie or scrambling for par. Mediterranean vegetation and stands of pine frame the corridors and give the course a quiet, natural feel despite its length.

This is a course that flatters a confident driver and tests a tidy iron player, which makes it a fine choice early in a Mallorca trip when the group wants to open the shoulders.
