El Saler Golf Course

Javier Arana's masterpiece, and many a travelling golfer's favourite course in Spain. El Saler runs through umbrella pines and tumbling sand dunes in the Albufera natural park south of Valencia, a links in all but name where the back nine breaks out to the Mediterranean shore. It has hosted the Open de Espana and sits high on every serious ranking of European golf.

The verdict

Built by Javier Arana in 1968 and set in the protected pine forest and dunes of the Albufera, just south of Valencia, El Saler is the course that carried Arana's name beyond Spain. It is a par 72 that moves from sheltered, tree lined holes inland to genuine linksland by the sea, and the transition is seamless. The turf, the wind off the Mediterranean and the great rolling dunes of the closing stretch give it a character closer to the links of Britain and Ireland than to the resort courses of the Costas.

What keeps El Saler on the short list of Europe's best is the quality of the golf rather than any manufactured drama. Arana routed the holes to use the natural fall of the land, the greens are bold and well defended, and the seaside holes of the back nine, played among and over the dunes, are as good as any in continental Europe. It is a public course attached to the Parador hotel, which makes one of the game's true architectural gems refreshingly accessible to the visiting golfer.

The holes worth the trip

The round opens through the pines, where the trees frame the driving lines and the wind is muted, and it would be easy to think El Saler a pleasant parkland test and nothing more. Arana uses these early holes to set the rhythm before the land opens up and the sea announces itself.

It is the dune holes that golfers come back to talk about. The seventeenth, a long par 3 played along the shoreline, and the run of holes around it move through some of the finest natural linksland on the Spanish coast, where the wind, the firm turf and the rumpled fairways ask for the low, controlled shots of true links golf. Reading the bounce and keeping the ball beneath the breeze matters far more here than raw length.

The greens throughout are large and shaped with conviction, so distance control and the right angle of approach decide the score. El Saler rewards the thinking golfer who plays for position and accepts that par is a good number when the sea breeze gets up. It is a course to play more than once, and one that grows on you with every round.
