Club de Golf Alcanada

Widely rated the finest course in Mallorca, Club de Golf Alcanada was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2003 on the Bay of Alcudia in the island's northeast. A par 72 of about 7,100 yards, it takes its name and its emblem from the little island of Alcanada and its lighthouse offshore, visible from most of the course, and rewards a trip with golf to match its setting.

The verdict

Alcanada is the standout course in Mallorca and one of the most enjoyable resort rounds in the Mediterranean, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design opened in 2003 on rising ground above the Bay of Alcudia. The island of Alcanada and its lighthouse sit offshore in full view, and the course frames that picture beautifully while delivering a varied, strategic test across pine clad hills down toward the sea.

It suits the travelling golfer who wants championship quality without the crowds of the mainland resorts, on an island that is easy to reach and a pleasure to spend a week on. There is little else of this calibre on Mallorca, so most visitors play Alcanada twice and fill the rest of the trip with the island's gentler layouts.

The holes worth the trip

Trent Jones Jr. routed the course to keep the lighthouse and the bay in the eye for as long as possible, with elevated tees giving long views and tempting lines over pine and rock. The front nine climbs into the hills before the back works down toward the water, and the closing holes by the bay are the most photographed on the island.

It is a fair but exacting test, generous off the tee in places and demanding in others, with well defended greens that ask for a thoughtful approach. The Mediterranean light, the pines and the constant sight of the lighthouse make it as memorable to look at as it is to play.

Conditioning is excellent year round, and because Mallorca enjoys a long season the course plays well from early spring into late autumn, with winter golf very possible in the island's mild climate.
