Dumbarnie Links

Dumbarnie Links is the most acclaimed new links in Scotland this century. Opened in 2020 on a sweep of Fife coast above Largo Bay, Clive Clark's design plays big and bold across natural duneland, with wide fairways, huge greens and sea views from all eighteen holes. Just down the road from St Andrews, it has gone from new arrival to must play in barely five years.

The verdict

Few new courses arrive as fully formed as Dumbarnie. Clive Clark routed it to use a raised plateau and a lower coastal shelf, so holes tumble down to the shore and climb back with the Firth of Forth always in view, and crucially it was built to be walked and enjoyed rather than merely survived. The fairways are generous, the greens enormous and the strategy clear, a links that thrills good players without punishing the rest.

Its location is its trump card. Twenty minutes from St Andrews and close to Kingsbarns, Crail and the Fife coast, Dumbarnie slots straight into the strongest links itinerary in golf, and because it is newer and a touch easier to book than its famous neighbours, it has quickly become the round that groups rave about when they get home.

The holes worth the trip

The par 5s are the headline. Several are reachable down the slope toward the sea, tempting you to take on bunkers and run outs for an eagle chance, and they give the round a generous, exhilarating rhythm that suits a holiday fourball perfectly. This is big scale links golf with risk and reward built into every decision.

The short holes use the elevation beautifully, dropping to greens set against the beach with the bay glittering beyond, the kind of one shot holes that end up on the camera roll. Wind direction transforms them from a flick of a wedge to a committed long iron, which is exactly as links golf should be.

What ties the round together is the conditioning and the views. From the high ground you can see across the Forth to East Lothian and along the Fife coast, and the turf is firm, fast and true, so even five years on Dumbarnie plays with the maturity of a links many decades older.
