Archerfield Fidra Links
The Fidra is one half of the 36 hole Archerfield estate on the East Lothian coast, a David J Russell links named for the little island offshore that is said to have inspired Treasure Island. It opens through sheltering woodland and finishes out among the dunes with the Firth of Forth and Fidra filling the view, a polished, modern links in the company of giants.

The verdict
East Lothian is the richest stretch of golf coast in Scotland outside Fife, home to Muirfield, North Berwick and Gullane. Archerfield is the modern arrival among them, a private estate near Dirleton with two courses, a fine hotel and a clutch of lodges. The Fidra, opened in 2004 to a David J Russell design, is the one that feels most like classic links. It is a par 72 of up to around 6,942 yards that begins tree lined and sheltered before breaking out into the dunes for a run of open, windswept holes.
It suits the golfer basing in East Lothian who wants a beautifully kept, slightly more sheltered round to sit alongside the rawer tests up the coast. As part of a stay at Archerfield House or the lodges, with the spa and the second course on hand, it is also one of the most comfortable golf bases in Scotland.

The holes worth the trip
The opening holes are the surprise. Rather than throwing you straight into the wind, the Fidra threads its early stretch through mature woodland, sheltered and quiet, easing you into the round. It is an unusual way to start a links and it gives Archerfield a character all its own.
The course earns its name on the way home, when the trees fall away and the holes spill out into the dunes with Fidra island and the Firth of Forth laid out beyond. This is where the wind finds you and where the firm, rumpled links ground asks for a lower, running ball. On a bright day with the Forth sparkling it is as pretty a finish as East Lothian offers.
Throughout, the conditioning is immaculate, a reflection of the private estate around it. The Fidra is not the longest or the fiercest links on this coast, but it is one of the most enjoyable to play and one of the best presented.
