The verdict

Education City Golf Club is the rare championship layout that sits inside a university campus, woven through the parks and pavilions of Qatar Foundation's Education City in the heart of Doha. It is the first solo design in the region from two time Masters champion José María Olazábal, and it announced itself quickly: by 2020 it was hosting the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, and it has staged the DP World Tour event since.

The championship course runs to a par 72 of 7,306 yards, a clever desert design that uses sculpted dunescaping, generous fairways and well defended greens rather than gimmicks. Around it sits a full short game complex, a floodlit 9 hole course and a lit 6 hole layout, plus a Center of Excellence with teaching studios and a TrackMan range. For a visiting golfer in Doha, this is the marquee round, and the night golf makes it one of the few places you can play comfortably after the heat of the day.

The holes worth the trip

Olazábal routed the championship course to reward shaping off the tee. The fairways are wide enough to swing freely, but the angles into the greens tighten the closer you get, and the bunkering is deep and stylish in the way you expect from a player who built his career on a precise short game. The greens are large and subtly contoured, so distance control matters more than raw length.

The closing stretch is where the Qatar Masters is usually decided, with water and bold green complexes turning a steady round into a tense finish. The course record of 63, shared by Alexander Björk and Pablo Larrazabal, gives a sense of how low the professionals can go when the wind drops, and how the layout still protects par when it gets up.

Played from the right tees, Education City is a genuine pleasure rather than a slog. The conditioning is tournament grade year round, the practice facilities are among the best in the Gulf, and the floodlit short courses give a group somewhere to play in the evening. It is a complete golf destination on a single, walkable site minutes from central Doha.
