The Dutch Golf Club

Colin Montgomerie, with European Golf Design, created The Dutch at Spijk in the heart of the Netherlands, and it opened in 2011 as the country's most ambitious modern course. A par 71 with an inland links feel of rolling fairways, gorse and water, it hosted the KLM Open from 2016 to 2018 and remains a premium private club.

The verdict

Colin Montgomerie, working with European Golf Design, laid out The Dutch at Spijk, between Rotterdam and the German border, and it opened in 2011. On flat Dutch farmland the architects manufactured a dramatic, undulating landscape, rolling fairways framed by deep bunkers, water and gorse, a convincing inland links that feels nothing like the polder it sits on.

It made its name as a tournament course, hosting the KLM Open on the European Tour from 2016 to 2018, and it sits within the European Tour Destinations network. It is a premium private members club, so access is for members and their guests rather than casual visitors, but for a well connected golf trip it is one of continental Europe's most striking modern designs and a fine pairing with the great Dutch links on the coast.

The holes worth the trip

The Dutch is a manufactured inland links, and the shaping is the star: rolling fairways, grass faced and revetted bunkering, gorse and water that give the round real variety on otherwise flat ground. The greens are large and contoured, and the wind, as on any links, is the chief defence.

Set up for the KLM Open, it stretches to championship length and asks for both power and precision, with water in play on several of the closing holes. From the members' tees it is a fair and thoroughly enjoyable test of strategic golf.

It is a club built for golf and entertaining in equal measure, with a fine modern clubhouse, and the experience is polished throughout. As a private club it rewards a connection or a well planned trip rather than a walk up tee time.

Where to stay nearby

There is no resort on site, so a trip here works best built around the Randstad cities, with Rotterdam, Utrecht and even Amsterdam within reasonable reach for hotels, dining and culture between rounds.

For a golf focused trip, pair The Dutch, access permitting, with the celebrated coastal links north of the cities, courses like Kennemer and Koninklijke Haagsche, for a contrast of manufactured and natural Dutch golf. Late spring through summer is the season.
