The Best Dunes Golf Courses in Continental Europe

Links golf is not the preserve of the British Isles. Along the coasts of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Portugal lie some of the finest dunes courses in the world, the work of Colt, Alison and Simpson among them. Our ranked eight, with our verdicts and how to play each one.

How we ranked them

The British Isles get the glory, but the great architects of the golden age crossed the Channel too, and on the sandy coasts of the continent they found duneland every bit as good as anything in Lancashire or Lothian. We weighed the quality and strategy of the golf, the scale and authenticity of the dunes, the architectural pedigree, the conditioning, and how readily a visiting group can play. The result leans on the celebrated Dutch coast, where three world class links sit within an hour of each other, then takes in Belgium, the French Opal Coast and the modern dune courses of Portugal's Silver Coast.

Every fact here, the designers, the year each course took shape and the indicative green fees, was checked at the time of writing in June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk. Fees move with the season and the year, and the leading Dutch clubs limit visitor days, so treat the numbers as a guide and always confirm directly before booking. The verdicts are ours. If your group wants the Dutch coast or a French and Portuguese dunes tour built into one costed itinerary, with the right hotels and tee times, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The 8 best dunes golf courses in continental Europe

1

Royal Hague, Koninklijke Haagsche Golf and Country Club

Harry Colt and Hugh Alison, 1938 · Wassenaar, Netherlands

The finest dunes course on the continent, a dramatic big dune links near The Hague designed by Harry Colt and Hugh Alison, with most of the credit to Alison. The fairways crash and tumble through towering sandhills with almost no artificial shaping and famously few bunkers, the land itself providing all the defense a course could need. Consistently ranked in the top handful in continental Europe, Royal Hague is the equal of the great British links and our clear number one.

2

Kennemer Golf and Country Club

Harry Colt, 1928 · Zandvoort, Netherlands

A Harry Colt masterpiece in the dunes at Zandvoort near Amsterdam and a frequent host of the Dutch Open, its thatched clubhouse one of the most charming in golf. Undulating fairways, raised tees, deep bunkers and slick, contoured greens make it a classic, strategic links, beautifully matured among the pines and the sand. Comfortably one of the best courses in the Netherlands, it pairs naturally with Royal Hague and Noordwijk for the strongest dunes trip on the continent.

3

Noordwijkse Golf Club

Built under Frank Pennink, 1972 · Noordwijk, Netherlands

The third of the celebrated Dutch coast links, laid out in the dunes at Noordwijk after the original Colt course further south was lost to the war. Frank Pennink supervised the construction of the present layout, a wonderful mix of open, windswept dune holes and quieter stretches through the pines, and a regular Dutch Open venue. Firm, fast and genuinely links in character, it completes the trio that makes the coast between The Hague and Amsterdam essential for the travelling golfer.

4

Royal Zoute, Championship Course

Harry Colt · Knokke-Heist, Belgium

Belgium's finest course, a Harry Colt links by the sea at fashionable Knokke on the Flemish coast, where the Championship Course winds through gentle dunes and around the town with the firm turf and clever bunkering of a true seaside test. Long a host of the Belgian Open, it has the understated, classical quality you expect of Colt, and the resort setting makes it an easy, elegant base. A short hop from the Dutch links, it slots neatly into a low countries dunes tour.

5

Le Touquet, La Mer Course

Harry Colt and Hugh Alison, 1931 · Le Touquet, France

France's number one links, a Colt and Alison design set deep among the sandhills of the Opal Coast south of Boulogne. La Mer is the real thing, firm and rumpled and exposed to the Channel wind, with blind shots and natural greens that could sit happily in Kent or Norfolk. A short ferry or train from England, it has long been a favorite of British golfers and is the centerpiece of the Pas de Calais, the most accessible dunes golf on the continent.

6

Golf de Hardelot, Les Pins

Tom Simpson remodel, 1931 · Hardelot, France

The companion to Le Touquet a few miles down the Opal Coast, Les Pins is a Tom Simpson design routed beautifully through the dunes and umbrella pines of northern France. More wooded than its neighbor but no less strategic, it shows Simpson's genius for using the natural land, with subtle, demanding greens and a serene, sheltered character. Together with Le Touquet it makes the Pas de Calais a two course dunes destination just across the Channel from southern England.

7

Praia D'El Rey

Cabell Robinson, 1997 · Obidos, Portugal · par 73

The pick of Portugal's Silver Coast, a Cabell Robinson design north of Lisbon that routes genuine links holes through the Atlantic dunes alongside stretches of pine and parkland. The seaside holes, tumbling through the sandhills with the Berlengas Islands on the horizon, are as good as any dunes golf in Iberia, and the resort and beach setting make it a complete trip. Long rated Portugal's best venue outside the Algarve, it anchors a coast that golfers are only now discovering.

8

West Cliffs

Cynthia Dye, 2017 · Obidos, Portugal · par 72

The modern dunes sensation of the Silver Coast, a Cynthia Dye links laid through two hundred hectares of rolling sandhills next door to Praia D'El Rey, with the Atlantic in view from every hole. Named the World's Best New Golf Course on opening, it is a big, natural, sustainable design that sits seamlessly in its wild coastal setting and proves great dunes golf is still being built. Paired with its neighbor, it makes Obidos the most exciting new dunes destination in continental Europe.

Where they are, and indicative costs

The dunes courses fall into three regions. The Dutch coast between The Hague and Amsterdam gathers Royal Hague, Kennemer and Noordwijk within an hour of one another, the single best dunes cluster on the continent, with Royal Zoute just over the border in Belgium. The French Opal Coast pairs Le Touquet and Hardelot a short ferry or train from England. Portugal's Silver Coast north of Lisbon brings the modern duo of Praia D'El Rey and West Cliffs. Good transport ties each cluster together, and our concierge sequences the hotels and tee times to suit.
