The verdict
Vipingo Ridge is one of Africa’s most distinctive golf destinations. Set on a breezy ridge above the Indian Ocean on Kenya’s Kilifi coast, the championship Baobab Course was laid out by David Jones, a former Kenya Open champion turned architect, and named for the ancient baobab trees that punctuate the property. In 2016 it became the only PGA accredited course in East and Central Africa, and it stages the Magical Kenya Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour.
At about 6,586 yards and par 72, it is a genuine test that uses the coastal breeze, a network of lakes and streams, and the natural roll of the ridge to defend itself. The unforgettable part is the setting: giraffe, zebra, eland, oryx and gazelle roam freely across the course, so a round here is part championship golf, part safari. Combined with a beach stay or a wider Kenyan safari, it is a once in a lifetime golf trip.

The holes worth the trip
The Baobab Course makes the most of its ridge top site, with elevation changes opening up views toward the Indian Ocean and the coastal breeze adding a links like variable to club selection. Interconnected lakes and streams meander through the routing, bringing water into play and framing several of the strongest holes.
David Jones routed a fair but demanding test that rewards position and shot shaping over raw power, with well bunkered, receptive greens and a good mix of testing par 3s and reachable par 5s. The ancient baobabs stand sentinel over the fairways and give the course its name and its character.
What makes a round here unlike any other is the wildlife: it is entirely normal to share a fairway with giraffe or a herd of zebra, and to pause a swing while a family of antelope crosses the ridge. It is championship golf with a true safari soundtrack, and it stays with you long after the round.
