Golf de Sperone
Robert Trent Jones Sr shaped Golf de Sperone on the cliffs at the southern tip of Corsica in 1990, one of the last courses the great architect built, and the setting is sublime: maquis scrub and granite running down to a turquoise Mediterranean, with the Lavezzi and Cavallo islands across the water. A par 72 of about 6,390 yards, it owns one of the finest seaside holes in Europe.

The verdict
Sperone sits on the Punta di Sperone at the very bottom of Corsica, near the old citadel town of Bonifacio, and Robert Trent Jones Sr used the peninsula's drama to the full when the course opened in 1990. The front nine moves through fragrant maquis and umbrella pines, then the closing holes break out onto the cliffs above the sea, where the course earns its reputation.
It is not long by modern standards, but it does not need to be. The wind, the cliffs and the carries over inlets of the Mediterranean supply all the challenge, and the views from the seaside holes are among the best in European golf. Add the white sand beaches and the restaurants of Bonifacio close by, and Sperone is the centrepiece of a Corsican golf and sailing escape.

The holes worth the trip
Sperone plays in two distinct acts. The inland holes wind through the scented maquis and pines, tighter and more sheltered, asking for position over power and setting up the drama to come. The greens are honest and the bunkering classic Trent Jones, framing the targets on the diagonal.
The course is famous for its seaside finish, led by the par 5 sixteenth that bends along the cliff top above the Mediterranean, a hole regularly compared to the great oceanfront holes at Pebble Beach. The carries flirt with the sea and the views toward the Lavezzi islands are unforgettable.
The closing holes hold the drama right to the last, the wind off the water deciding club and line. Sperone rewards the player who keeps the ball under the breeze and commits to the carries, and it gives back a round in one of the most beautiful corners of the Mediterranean.
