The Pearl Championship Course

On the Coral Coast at Pacific Harbour, The Pearl is Fiji's most complete championship test. A Robert Trent Jones Jr design carried out with Gary Roger Baird, this par 72 of close to 7,000 yards threads through tropical rainforest and a network of canals, with water in play on 12 of its 18 holes.

The verdict

The Pearl is the round to build a Fiji golf trip around if you want a real championship layout rather than a gentle resort loop. It sits at Pacific Harbour, the adventure capital of the Coral Coast, roughly midway between Nadi and Suva on the south side of Viti Levu, and it carries far more design pedigree than its sleepy island setting suggests. The course was laid out by Robert Trent Jones Jr in partnership with Gary Roger Baird, and Pacific Harbour was good enough to host the World Amateur Team Championship in 1978, a year after the course first opened.

What you get is a full par 72 of close to 7,000 yards routed through dense tropical rainforest, with canals, lakes and ponds threaded across the property so that water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes. A set of 66 bunkers adds the second line of defense. It is generous enough off the tee to be enjoyable for a mid handicapper on holiday, yet long enough and watery enough from the back markers to keep a serious player honest. As the headline course of a Coral Coast trip, it gives a group the test that lighter resort courses cannot.

The holes worth the trip

Rainforest and water are the architects at The Pearl. Robert Trent Jones Jr cut wide, inviting corridors through the jungle, then used the canals and ponds left from the low coastal ground to pressure the second shot and the par 3s. The result is a course that looks benign from the tee and asks sharper questions as you move toward the green, where carries over water and well placed bunkers reward the player who controls distance rather than the one who simply hits it far.

The par 5s give bigger hitters a chance to gamble, with reachable angles guarded by canal edges, while the short holes are where the round is often decided, each demanding a clean strike to a green ringed by sand or water. The jungle walls in the fairways and traps the wayward drive, so the smart play is to favor the safe side and trust a wedge into these receptive greens. From the forward tees it is a relaxed tropical round; from the tips, in a stiffening sea breeze, it has genuine length and bite.

Above all it has a sense of place that lingers. Dense Fijian rainforest, bright water and birdsong frame every hole, and the Beqa Lagoon, rivers and rapids of Pacific Harbour are minutes away. For a traveling golfer it blends a true championship layout with the feel of a South Pacific adventure.

Where to stay nearby

The natural base is The Pearl South Pacific resort beside the course at Pacific Harbour, a boutique spot on the Coral Coast that puts the first tee, the marina and the beach within a few minutes of each other. It suits a couples or buddies trip that wants golf alongside diving the Beqa Lagoon, river rafting and easy days by the sea.

From a Coral Coast base the golf pairs naturally with the rest of Viti Levu. Combine The Pearl with the Vijay Singh designed seaside links at Natadola Bay and the resort round at Denarau near Nadi for a fuller Fiji golf escape.
