Albatross Golf Resort

Half an hour southwest of Prague, Keith Preston built the course that put Czech golf on the championship map. Opened in 2009, ranked number one in the country and a host of the Czech Masters on the DP World Tour, this par 72 of around 7,358 yards is a modern, water laced test that proves central Europe can stage golf with the best of them.

The verdict

Albatross is the course that gave the Czech Republic a true championship venue. When it opened in 2009 to a Keith Preston design, it was built deliberately to tour standard, and the gamble paid off: it has hosted the Czech Masters on the DP World Tour, joined the European Tour Destinations network and settled in as the consensus number one course in the country. For a golf trip built around Prague, it is the marquee round.

This is modern resort golf done seriously. Preston moved a great deal of earth and planted well over a thousand trees to shape a parkland layout with water in play across many holes and five tee sets that let it stretch from a fair members test to a brute for the professionals. Pair it with one of Europe's most beautiful cities and a clutch of other good courses around Prague, and Albatross anchors a trip that delivers far more than first time visitors expect.

The holes worth the trip

Preston used water as the defining hazard, and lakes and streams come into play on a large share of the holes, asking for committed carries and honest course management rather than reckless aggression. From the forward tees the carries are gentle and the course is a pleasure, but from the championship markers the water turns several holes into genuine decisions off the tee and into the green.

The greens are large, undulating and quick when prepared for tournament play, so position on the putting surface matters as much as hitting it. The par 5s tempt the long hitter to take on the water for an eagle chance, while the strong par 4s and a well varied set of par 3s make sure nothing is given away cheaply. It is the kind of layout that examines every club in the bag.

Conditioning is the other headline. Albatross is maintained to a standard that visitors from the great resorts of western Europe immediately recognise, and the practice facilities and clubhouse match it. This is a course built to host, and it shows in every detail.
