Course profile · Ponoka, Alberta, Canada

Wolf Creek Golf Resort

Wolf Creek is the course that launched Rod Whitman, the Canadian architect later behind Cabot Links and Sagebrush. His Old Course opened in 1984 as his first solo design, an inland links of par 72 and about 6,624 yards carved into the prairie near Ponoka, between Calgary and Edmonton. With a second Links course and on site lodging, it is one of Alberta's most distinctive golf destinations.

The verdict

Wolf Creek matters far beyond its size. Rod Whitman built the Old Course here as his first solo design, opening it in 1984 on rolling prairie land near Ponoka in central Alberta, and the inland links he shaped became a cult favorite and a launchpad for one of the most admired careers in modern golf architecture. The same hand later produced Cabot Links in Nova Scotia and Sagebrush in British Columbia, and the DNA of those courses is visible here first.

For the traveling golfer it is a different kind of Alberta round, not mountain scenery but firm, fescue lined links golf on the plains, with rumpled fairways, deep bunkers and the wind as the main defense. The Old Course is the headline, a compact par 72 of about 6,624 yards where angles and ground game matter more than length, and a second Links course rounds out 36 holes. With lodging on site, it works as a low key golf retreat or a stop between Calgary and Edmonton.

The holes worth the trip

The Old Course is a study in restraint and ground game. Whitman routed it in and out of the Wolf Creek bed, using the natural rolls of the prairie to create fairways that feed and reject, greens that accept a running approach and bunkering that punishes the careless line. There is little water and few trees in the way; the wind and the contours do the defending, which is exactly what gives the round its links character.

At about 6,624 yards it is not long by modern standards, but the test is in placement and imagination, finding the right side of the fairway to open the green and judging the bounce on firm turf. The set of short holes is varied and clever, and the par 5s tempt the bigger hitter to take on the creek and the angles. It is the kind of course that grows on you across a couple of plays.

The second Links course extends the experience with more of the same open, wind exposed golf, so a stay here is really a 36 hole links retreat on the prairie. Walking is a pleasure on firm ground, and the resort's lodging makes it easy to play morning and afternoon and stay over.
