The Algonquin Golf Course
Golf has been played at St Andrews by-the-Sea since the 1890s, and Thomas McBroom's 2000 redesign turned the old seaside layout into the finest course in New Brunswick. A par 72 of about 7,135 yards beside Passamaquoddy Bay, it saves its best for a back nine that runs hard along the water.

The verdict
The Algonquin is the headline golf experience of Atlantic Canada's prettiest resort town. Golfers have come to St Andrews by-the-Sea for well over a century, but the course as it plays today is the work of Canadian architect Thomas McBroom, whose 2000 redesign reworked the routing and pushed several holes out toward the shoreline of Passamaquoddy Bay. The result is widely ranked the number one course in New Brunswick.
It plays as a par 72 of about 7,135 yards, with a rating near 75.2 and a slope around 131, but the numbers are not the story. The front nine is a handsome, sheltered parkland warm up, and then the back nine opens to the sea, a run of clifftop and shoreline holes with the tide, the wind and the bay all in play. Paired with the grand red roofed Algonquin Resort above it, it is the natural centerpiece of a Maritimes golf trip.

The holes worth the trip
The opening stretch eases you in through mature trees and rolling parkland above the town, with generous landing areas and the resort's towers in view. It is genuinely good golf, but it is also a set up: McBroom routed the round so that the drama builds, holding the seaside back for when it lands hardest.
The back nine is the reason players make the trip. Several holes run right along the cliffs and shoreline of Passamaquoddy Bay, the kind of exposed, tide and wind affected golf that feels closer to a Scottish links than to inland Canada. Club selection swings two or three sticks on the breeze, and a wayward shot can find the rocks below rather than a friendly bounce.
At about 7,135 yards from the tips it has the length to stretch a strong player, but the smart move is to tee it forward, keep the ball under the wind and enjoy the views. The closing holes climb back toward the hotel with the bay at your shoulder, the sort of finish that fixes The Algonquin in the memory long after the round.
