Greywolf Golf Course

Greywolf is the mountain course golfers cross provinces to play, set high in the Kootenay Rockies at Panorama. Doug Carrick opened this par 72 of 7,140 yards in 1999 and built it around the Cliffhanger, a clifftop par 3 over Hopeful Canyon that is one of the most photographed holes in Canada.

The verdict

Greywolf is one of Canada's great mountain courses and the reason many golfers detour into the Kootenays. Doug Carrick, working with a dramatic site at Panorama Mountain Resort, opened it in 1999 and designed the whole routing around a single hole: the Cliffhanger, a par 3 that plays from a clifftop tee across the chasm of Hopeful Canyon to a green perched on the far rim. The rest of the course lives up to that calling card.

For the traveling golfer it is a thrilling, scenic round in air so clean the ball seems to fly forever. The elevation, the forest corridors and the Rocky Mountain backdrop make it memorable, and the conditioning is consistently strong for a course at altitude. It pairs naturally with a stay at Panorama and a wider Kootenay or Okanagan loop, and it is firmly on the bucket list for golfers touring western Canada.

The holes worth the trip

Everything at Greywolf points toward the 6th, the Cliffhanger. From an exposed clifftop tee the hole plays across Hopeful Canyon to a green set on the opposite ledge, with a sheer drop short and a cliff behind, so the only shot is a committed carry to the heart of the putting surface. Carrick has said the routing was designed around this hole, and it remains the image golfers carry home from Panorama.

The supporting cast is strong. Carrick used the mountain terrain for elevated tees and tumbling fairways, with forced carries over creeks and ravines and greens that fall away into the forest. The altitude adds distance to every club, so judging the carry is part of the fun, and the course rewards a player who can flight the ball through the mountain air.

Beyond the golf, the Rocky Mountain setting is a constant: peaks on the horizon, larch and fir lining the fairways, and the resort village below. Take a cart for the climbs, keep an extra ball ready for the canyon holes, and build in time on the terrace to relive the Cliffhanger afterward.
