Jasper Park
Stanley Thompson cut Jasper Park from the Rocky Mountain wilderness in 1925, and a hundred years on it remains one of the most beautiful and revered courses in Canada. A par 71 laid out along Lake Beauvert beneath Pyramid Mountain, it is mountain golf at its most majestic, crowned by the Cleopatra par 3, one of the most photographed short holes in the game.

The verdict
Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course is Stanley Thompson's first great mountain work, opened in 1925 and built by hand from dense wilderness, with teams of men and horses clearing boulders and timber to reveal the routing along Lake Beauvert. It is widely held to be one of the finest courses in Canada, a par 71 that uses the dramatic scale of Jasper National Park, the towering peaks, the glacial lake, the forested valley floor, to frame golf of real strategy and grace.
This is not a long course by modern numbers, about 6,663 yards, but length was never the point. Thompson defended it with bold, artful bunkering, tilting fairways and green complexes that demand the right angle and the right club in thin mountain air. The setting alone makes it a bucket list round, yet it is the quality of the design beneath the scenery that earns its place among the greats. After a wildfire cut the 2024 season short, the course reopened in 2025 for its centenary and continues to welcome golfers to one of the most spectacular settings in the sport.

The holes worth the trip
The signature hole, and one of the most celebrated par 3s anywhere, is the ninth, named Cleopatra. Set against the backdrop of Pyramid Mountain, the green was once shaped by Thompson with the silhouette of a reclining figure framed by mounds and bunkers, a piece of design theatre that has drawn golfers and photographers for a century. It is the postcard of Jasper Park, but far from its only highlight.
Thompson routed the course to reveal the mountains hole by hole, with elevated tees that open up vast panoramas and fairways that bend around stands of pine and spruce. The long par 5s, the muscular two shotters and a clever set of short holes give the round a fine rhythm, and the thin mountain air sends the ball a touch further, so club selection rewards local knowledge. The bunkering, bold and beautifully placed, is pure Thompson, asking the player to choose a line rather than simply avoid trouble.
Walkable, strategic and set in scenery that few courses on earth can match, Jasper Park is a round to savour slowly. Take a caddie or a knowledgeable cart partner, play the right tees, and give yourself time to take in the peaks, because the views are as much a part of the experience as the golf.
