Joondalup Country Club
Half an hour north of Perth, Joondalup is Robert Trent Jones Jr's bold course of 27 holes, carved through bushland, around lakes and into an abandoned limestone quarry. The Quarry, Dune and Lake nines combine into three dramatic rounds of eighteen, and the par 72 routings rank among the best public golf in Western Australia.

The verdict
Joondalup Resort, home course of the Joondalup Country Club, is the most theatrical public golf around Perth, a Robert Trent Jones Jr design that opened in 1985 and has stayed near the top of the state's rankings ever since. Three nines, the Quarry, the Dune and the Lake, are routed through dense coastal bushland, around lakes and, most memorably, into and out of a worked out limestone quarry.
It is a course built for a sense of occasion. The Quarry nine in particular delivers the kind of cliff framed, drop shot drama that visitors remember, and the fact that it is all open to the public seven days a week makes it a rare thing among Australia's signature courses. For a golf trip to Perth it is close to essential.

The holes worth the trip
The three nines each play to par 36 and combine into par 72 rounds of about 6,300 to 6,800 metres depending on the pairing. The Quarry is the star, plunging into the old limestone workings where sheer rock walls frame several holes and the tee shots ask for nerve as much as technique.
The Dune nine is the tightest of the three, threading narrow corridors through thick native bush where accuracy off the tee is everything. The Lake nine opens out across a more exposed headland where the wind becomes the main defense and water guards several greens.
Trent Jones Jr's trademarks are all here, the bold shaping, the heroic carries and the greens that reward the right angle of approach. From the back tees it is a stern examination, but the multiple tees let any standard enjoy the spectacle. Few public courses in the country deliver this much drama.

Where to stay nearby
The resort itself is the natural base, with a hotel beside the first tee and stay and play packages that make an early start easy. It sits in Connolly, in Perth's fast growing northern corridor, close to the beaches of the Sunset Coast and an easy run from the city.
For a wider trip, central Perth and the coastal suburbs put Joondalup within half an hour and add the city's dining, the Swan Valley and Fremantle to the itinerary. Joondalup pairs well with the other great Perth courses for a few days of golf in the west.
