How we chose

How we ranked the best society golf in Dubai

A society trip needs more than great golf: it needs reliable weather, hotels that take a big group, easy transfers and a city that keeps everyone entertained off the course. Dubai delivers all of it. We weigh the quality of each course first, then how it suits a society week: the strength of the design, the conditioning, how well it handles a large party, and how easily it slots into a city base with the rest of the group. The verdicts are ours.

Dubai's golf is compact and modern. A dozen championship courses by big name architects sit minutes apart across the city, lit by guaranteed winter sun and backed by some of the best hotels in the world. That makes the logistics of a society trip unusually simple: stay central, play a different marquee course each morning, and enjoy the dining, the beach clubs and the nightlife in the evening. We have ranked the courses, but the city itself is half the appeal.

The ranking

The eight best courses for a society trip in Dubai

From the Desert Classic theatre of the Majlis to the tour pedigree of the Earth Course, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to take the society there.

01

Emirates Golf Club, Majlis Course

Emirates Hills · Karl Litten, 1988 · resort

The course that started Dubai golf, a Karl Litten design opened in 1988 and the first grass championship course in the Middle East, long the home of the Dubai Desert Classic. Rated the best course in the region and inside world rankings, it pairs genuine tournament pedigree with a central location and a clubhouse built for entertaining. The headline round of any Dubai society trip.

02

Jumeirah Golf Estates, Earth Course

Jumeirah Golf Estates · Greg Norman · resort

A Greg Norman championship layout that hosted the season ending DP World Tour Championship for over a decade, the Earth Course is tree lined, water guarded and immaculately presented, a true tour test wrapped in a polished residential resort. With its sister Fire Course alongside, it gives a society two top rounds on one estate. A must play for the serious golfers.

03

Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club

Deira · waterfront · resort

The most atmospheric round in the city, a mature waterfront course on the Dubai Creek beneath the iconic sail shaped clubhouse, with the marina and the skyline as a backdrop. Central, characterful and a touch more old school than the desert resorts, it is a society favorite for the setting and the lively clubhouse, and an easy round to base a city stay around.

04

Trump International Golf Club Dubai

Damac Hills · Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, 2017 · resort

A modern Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner design that debuted in 2017, set in the Damac Hills development and served by the largest clubhouse in Dubai. Bold, strategic and beautifully built, with the natural bunkering and width that mark a Hanse course, it is one of the most talked about rounds in the city and a strong, contemporary contrast to the older clubs.

05

The Els Club Dubai

Dubai Sports City · Ernie Els, 2008 · resort

An Ernie Els signature design opened in 2008 in Dubai Sports City, blending a links inspired feel with desert framing, big sweeping fairways and bold bunkering. Generous off the tee but demanding around the greens, it is a fair, enjoyable test for a mixed handicap society and comes with a lively clubhouse that suits a group well. A reliable marquee round.

06

The Address Montgomerie Dubai

Emirates Hills · Colin Montgomerie with Desmond Muirhead · resort

A Colin Montgomerie design, in association with Desmond Muirhead, in the heart of Emirates Hills, with one of the largest greens in the world on the par 3 13th. Polished, central and attached to a hotel, it is a comfortable, high quality round that pairs easily with the Majlis nearby, and the on site lodging makes it a convenient society base.

07

Arabian Ranches Golf Club

Arabian Ranches · Ian Baker-Finch with Nicklaus Design · resort

A desert style course designed by Ian Baker-Finch in association with Nicklaus Design, routed through natural dunes, indigenous planting and sandy waste areas. A handsome, well conditioned layout that feels a world away from the city skyline, it offers a slightly more relaxed round to balance the championship tests and rounds out a varied society week nicely.

08

Jumeirah Golf Estates, Fire Course

Jumeirah Golf Estates · Greg Norman · resort

The bolder, more dramatic sibling to the Earth Course, a second Greg Norman layout with red bunker sand, water and big risk and reward holes. Playing the Fire and the Earth back to back on one estate is a brilliant double for a society, with everything, clubhouse, practice ground and lodging, in one place to keep the logistics simple.

Costs and access

Costs, the season and where to base

For a society the city itself is the base: stay central in Dubai Marina, Downtown or near the Creek and drive out to a different course each morning, all within twenty to forty minutes. November to April is the season, with warm, dry, sunny days ideal for golf; the summer from June to September is fiercely hot and best avoided for a golf trip, though green fees collapse. Transfers are quick and easy, English is spoken everywhere, and the off course entertainment, dining, beach clubs and nightlife, is world class, which is a large part of Dubai's pull for a group.

Dubai is not a value destination. Peak winter green fees at the marquee courses are among the highest in the world, and the hotels match, though the quality is exceptional and shoulder season rates ease the cost. The figures below are indicative per head costs for a typical society trip to help set the budget.
