The Best Golf Courses in Naples and Southwest Florida

Naples has more golf courses per head than anywhere in America, and the quality runs as deep as the quantity. From the improbable elevation of Calusa Pines and Greg Norman's resort theatre at Tiburon to Tom Fazio's walking only Old Collier and the Norman and Dye collaboration at Talis Park, this is the polished, manicured peak of Florida golf. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Southwest Florida golf is defined by two things: extraordinary conditioning and a heavily private membership. The best courses here are immaculate, lushly framed by palms, pines and water, and most of them sit behind the gates of country club communities from Naples through Bonita Springs to Estero. We weighed design quality first, which is why Calusa Pines, the Hurdzan and Fry course that conjured real elevation change out of flat Collier County land, leads the list, followed by Greg Norman's Tiburon, the marquee resort course that hosts both the LPGA's CME Group Tour Championship and the PGA Tour's QBE Shootout. Tom Fazio's exclusive Old Collier, Talis Park and TwinEagles fill out the private upper tier.

Every fact here, designers, opening years, host events, was checked at the time of writing. Where a course is a private members club, which is most of them in this corner of Florida, we say so plainly, and we have flagged the genuinely bookable courses, Tiburon at the Ritz-Carlton, the fully public Old Corkscrew, the Lely Resort courses and semi private Naples Grande, that make a visiting golf trip possible. The verdicts and the order are ours, and reasonable people will reorder the private top five. If you want any of these built into a costed Naples trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Calusa Pines Golf Club

Hurdzan and Fry, 2001 · Naples · private

The finest course in Southwest Florida and one of the most surprising in the state. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry opened Calusa Pines in 2001 east of Naples, and their masterstroke was building genuine elevation change, more than forty feet of it, from fill excavated on site, a rarity in pancake flat Florida that gives the course a rolling, almost upland feel through pine and sand. Beautifully conditioned, intensely private and routinely ranked among Florida's top handful, it is the connoisseur's choice in Naples, accessed through a member.

02

Tiburon Golf Club

Greg Norman, 1998 · Naples · resort, Ritz-Carlton guests

The marquee bookable round in Naples and the area's tournament home. Greg Norman designed the two 18 hole courses, the Gold and the Black, with no rough but stacked sod wall bunkers and a links inspired feel, set at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort. The Gold Course hosts both the LPGA's season ending CME Group Tour Championship and the PGA Tour's QBE Shootout, putting visiting golfers on the same turf as the best in the world. Open to resort guests, it is the easy anchor for any Naples trip.

03

Old Collier Golf Club

Tom Fazio, 2001 · Naples · private

One of the most exclusive and admired clubs in Florida, a Tom Fazio design from 2001 set along the Cocohatchee River north of Naples. Old Collier was among the first courses in the world grassed wall to wall in seashore paspalum, giving it firm, fast, sustainable turf, and it is a walking, caddie club with a small, devoted membership. Quietly brilliant and rarely seen, it is a private members club accessed through a member, and a treat for those who get the chance.

04

Talis Park Golf Club

Greg Norman and Pete Dye, 2002 · Naples · private

One of only a handful of courses in the world built by Greg Norman and Pete Dye together, originally opened as The Strand and reimagined as Talis Park. The two architects produced a bold, strategic layout through wetlands and pine, with the visual drama you would expect from the pairing, and it is consistently ranked among Florida's top twenty. A private community club, accessed through a member, and one of the most distinctive designs in the region.

05

Mediterra Golf Club

Tom Fazio, early 2000s · Naples · private

A 36 hole Tom Fazio club between Naples and Bonita Springs, with North and South courses that play very differently, the South rolling through pines, the North defined by big sandy waste areas and tighter fairways. Immaculately maintained and a perennial fixture in the area's best lists, Mediterra is the kind of polished, two course private community golf that Naples does better than anywhere. 06

TwinEagles, The Talon Course

Jack Nicklaus, 2002 · Naples · private

The headline course at the 36 hole TwinEagles club north east of Naples, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that has hosted senior tour events and plays through cypress, water and native preserve. Long, handsome and well bunkered, with a second course by Patrick and Steve Smyers alongside, the Talon is among the strongest private members courses in the area. Accessed through a member.

07

Old Corkscrew Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus, 2007 · Estero · public

The best public course in Southwest Florida and the bookable Nicklaus to balance the private clubs. Built in 2007 on raw, sandy scrub land near Estero, Old Corkscrew is a big, muscular par 72 stretching beyond 7,300 yards, with sweeping sand, wide native edges and a genuinely demanding test that has earned Best in State honours. Fully public and a fine value, it is the everyman counterpoint to the gated golf around Naples.

08

Naples Grande Golf Club

Rees Jones, 2000 · Naples · semi private, resort

A polished Rees Jones design winding through pine stands and natural waterways close to the heart of Naples, associated with the Naples Grande resort. Well conditioned and accessible to resort guests and members, it is one of the more readily bookable quality rounds in the city and a sensible inclusion in a visiting golfer's itinerary alongside Tiburon. Semi private, so confirm access before booking.

09

Quail West Golf and Country Club

Arthur Hills · Naples and Bonita Springs · private

A grand 36 hole club straddling the Collier and Lee county line, with two Arthur Hills courses, the Lakes and the Preserve, threading among lakes, wetlands and stately homes. 10

Lely Resort, Flamingo Island

Robert Trent Jones Sr · Lely, near Naples · resort, public

The pick of the daily fee golf around Naples, the Flamingo Island course at Lely Resort is a Robert Trent Jones Sr design of classic, big bunkered character, paired with the Lee Trevino designed Mustang course on the same resort. Fully bookable and a reliable, good value round, it rounds out the list as proof that a visiting golfer need not rely solely on private introductions to enjoy Naples golf.

Naples golf questions

What is the best golf course in Naples, Florida?

Calusa Pines Golf Club, the 2001 Hurdzan and Fry design east of Naples, is usually rated the number one course in the area, famous for the genuine elevation change its builders created from on site fill, a rarity in flat Florida. It is a private club, accessed through a member. For a marquee course a visitor can book, Greg Norman's Tiburon at the Ritz-Carlton resort, host of LPGA and PGA Tour events, is the standout.

Can you play the best Naples golf courses as a visitor?

Some, but Southwest Florida golf leans heavily private. The two 18 hole Norman courses at Tiburon are open to guests of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Old Corkscrew near Estero is fully public, Lely Resort has two daily fee courses, and Naples Grande is a semi private resort course. The very best, Calusa Pines, Old Collier, Talis Park, Mediterra, TwinEagles and Quail West, are private members clubs accessed through a member. Always confirm access and fees directly before booking.

When is the best time to play golf in Naples?

The peak season runs from January to April, the dry, warm winter months when Southwest Florida is at its best and busiest, with the highest green fees and tee sheets full of seasonal residents. The shoulder months of November, December and May offer very similar weather with better value, and the hot, humid, stormy summer from June to September is cheapest of all, with afternoon thunderstorms and some overseeding closures. Always confirm rates for your dates before booking.

Where is Naples and Southwest Florida for golf?

It is the Gulf coast of Florida south of Fort Myers, centred on Naples in Collier County and reaching north through Bonita Springs and Estero into Lee County. Naples has the highest concentration of golf courses per capita of anywhere in the United States. The gateway is Southwest Florida International Airport at Fort Myers, around forty minutes from central Naples, and a hire car links the courses easily.
