The Best Golf Courses in Singapore

Singapore packs championship golf into a small, immaculate island, led by the Serapong at Sentosa, a regular European Tour and LPGA host with the city skyline as a backdrop. Courses are mostly private member clubs, but the right introduction or package opens the door. Here are the six we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each.

How we chose them

Singapore is a small island with limited land, so it has few courses but a high standard, almost all of them private member clubs cut to manicured, tropical perfection. The headline venue is Sentosa Golf Club, whose Serapong has hosted the Singapore Open and the HSBC Women's World Championship and offers the famous view back across the water to the downtown towers. Tanah Merah on the eastern edge, Laguna National near the airport and the grand old Singapore Island Country Club fill out a compact but serious golf scene.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list. Because most of these are private clubs, visitor access usually runs through a member, a hotel package or a tournament, and weekday play is far easier than weekend. If you want a Singapore round built into a wider Asia trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Sentosa Golf Club, Serapong Course

Ronald Fream, 1982 · renovated 2006

The best course in Singapore and one of the finest in Asia. Ronald Fream's Serapong opened in 1982 and was rebuilt to championship standard in 2006, a par 72 wrapped around the southern shore of Sentosa with several holes along the water and the city skyline filling the horizon. It has hosted the Singapore Open and the HSBC Women's World Championship, and the closing stretch by the sea is among the best in the region. The round every visiting golfer wants.

02

Sentosa Golf Club, New Tanjong Course

Sentosa Golf Club · the island's second course

The Serapong's quieter sister at Sentosa, a fully rebuilt par 72 that winds through the resort island's tropical interior and along the coast. More forgiving and less exposed than its famous neighbour, it is a beautifully conditioned, enjoyable round in its own right and the natural pairing for a day or two of golf on Sentosa. Together the two courses make Sentosa the island's premier golf destination.

03

Tanah Merah Country Club, Tampines Course

Ronald Fream · par 72 · east Singapore

A strong championship test on the eastern edge of the island near Changi, designed by Ronald Fream and long one of the city's leading member courses. The Tampines is the tougher of Tanah Merah's two layouts, a tree lined par 72 with water in play and planes from the nearby airport overhead. Well conditioned and demanding, it is the connoisseur's choice among Singapore's private clubs.

04

Laguna National, Classic Course

Andy Dye, opened 2010 · par 72

Singapore's toughest course, a par 72 by Andy Dye of the famous Dye family, near the airport and Changi. Cavernous bunkers, water and humped, mounded fairways make for a stern, American style championship test that has hosted professional events. Paired with the club's Masters Course, it gives Laguna National two of the more challenging layouts in the country and a genuine examination for the better player.

05

Tanah Merah Country Club, Garden Course

Ron Fream · par 71 · east Singapore

The friendlier of Tanah Merah's two courses, a Ron Fream design built for beauty and playability rather than pure difficulty. A par 71 of lakes, gardens and mature trees, it offers a more relaxed but still polished round that suits mixed ability groups. With its tougher sister the Tampines alongside, it makes Tanah Merah an easy base for a couple of days of golf on the eastern side of the island.

06

Singapore Island Country Club

Singapore · the island's grand old club

The grand old institution of Singapore golf, a sprawling members club with several full length courses spread across two sites, the Bukit and Island locations beside the MacRitchie reservoir. Its Bukit course has a long history of hosting the Singapore Open, and the mature, tree lined layouts in the green heart of the island are a contrast to the resort golf of Sentosa. The most traditional, and most exclusive, golf in the country.

Singapore golf questions

What is the best golf course in Singapore?

The Serapong at Sentosa Golf Club, Ronald Fream's 1982 course rebuilt to championship standard in 2006, is our pick and the clear number one. It has hosted the Singapore Open and the HSBC Women's World Championship and offers the famous closing stretch by the water with the city skyline behind. It ranks among the best courses in Asia.

Can tourists play golf in Singapore?

Yes, but most courses are private member clubs, so visitor access usually runs through a member's introduction, a hotel or resort package or a tournament. Sentosa is the most accessible to visitors. Weekday tee times are far easier to secure than weekends, and a handicap certificate is often required. Always confirm access before booking.

When is the best time to play golf in Singapore?

Singapore is hot and humid year round, just north of the equator, so there is no real season. The drier, slightly cooler months from February to April are marginally the most comfortable, while the November to January monsoon brings heavier afternoon rain. Early morning tee times beat the worst of the midday heat at any time of year.

How many golf courses are in Singapore?

Singapore has only a handful of full courses given its size, the leading ones being Sentosa Golf Club, with the Serapong and New Tanjong, Tanah Merah Country Club, with the Tampines and Garden courses, Laguna National, with two layouts, and the Singapore Island Country Club, the large members club with several courses. Land pressure means new courses are rare.
