The Best Golf Courses in Perth, Australia

How we chose

Perth offers a rare contrast in a single trip: established, beautifully conditioned bushland courses around the city, and firm, running links on the dunes south of town. Our ranking rewards the courses that combine real design quality and conditioning with the variety that makes Western Australia such a rewarding golf destination, from the wetland setting of the state's premier club to the ocean side links of the Mandurah coast. The best of them sit within an hour or so of central Perth, so a group can mix bushland and seaside golf across a few days.

We weighed architecture and pedigree, conditioning, the strength of the wider experience and how readily a visiting golfer can get on. Several of these courses welcome visitors directly, while the leading private clubs are best reached through a member, a resort package or a trip planner. Designers and dates were verified at the time of writing; green fees vary by season and day, so always confirm directly before booking.

The ranking

1. Lake Karrinyup Country Club

Alex Russell · founded 1928 · bushland championship

The best course in Perth and the standard bearer for Western Australian golf. Founded in 1928 to a routing by Alex Russell, the Australian partner of Alister MacKenzie, Lake Karrinyup winds through native bushland around a wetland lake, with kangaroos and birdlife adding to the sense of place. It is immaculately presented, with the most interesting greens in the city, and has hosted European Tour and Australian PGA events. A private club and the round every visiting golfer wants to play.

A genuine links by the Indian Ocean toward Mandurah, south of Perth. Michael Coate, with Roger Mackay and the Open champion Ian Baker-Finch, laid out firm, running fairways and pot bunkering on sandy ground that plays like the great seaside courses of the British Isles. It is the round that gives a Perth trip its links contrast, and an exhilarating test when the sea breeze gets up.

4. The Cut Golf Course

James Wilcher · opened 2005 · dunes · Dawesville

Named for the Dawesville Cut nearby, James Wilcher's course runs through dramatically undulating dunes a stone's throw from the Indian Ocean. It is a striking modern links style layout with ocean views from much of the property, generous to play yet full of character, and one of the most enjoyable public access rounds within reach of Perth. Pair it with Kennedy Bay for a links day on the coast.

5. The Vines Resort

Swan Valley · 36 holes · resort

In the wine country of the Swan Valley north east of the city, The Vines is a 36 hole resort with two contrasting championship courses set among lakes, gum trees and resident kangaroos. It has a long history of hosting professional events and offers the easy logistics of on site accommodation, making it a popular golf and wine base for a relaxed group trip.

6. Mount Lawley Golf Club

Parkland · central Perth

A well regarded members' course close to the centre of Perth, Mount Lawley is a mature, tree lined parkland layout that has long been a fixture of WA rankings and has emerged refreshed from a recent program of redevelopment.
