The Best Golf Courses in Kansas City
Split across the Missouri and Kansas state line, Kansas City quietly offers some of the best value public golf in the Midwest, from a classic A.W. Tillinghast muni in the parkland hills to a Robert Trent Jones Jr championship test by the airport. Our ranked eight across the metro, with verdicts, access notes and how to play them.
How we ranked them
Kansas City is an underrated golf town. The metro straddles two states, and between them they hold a genuine Golden Age muni, a clutch of strong modern public courses and a handful of private gems. The best of it is rolling, tree lined parkland on honest Midwestern ground, and most of it is open to anyone willing to book. We weighed the quality of the design, the conditioning and the strength of the routing, how easily a visiting golfer can get on, and the pedigree of the course and its architect.
Every fact here, the designers, the opening years and the access, was checked at the time of writing in June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk. Green fees swing with the season and the day of the week, so treat any numbers as a guide and always confirm directly before booking. The verdicts are ours. If your group wants any of these built into a costed itinerary, that is exactly what our concierge does.
The 8 best golf courses in Kansas City
Swope Memorial Golf Course
The standout, and proof that a city muni can be a serious piece of architecture. A.W. Tillinghast reworked Swope Memorial in the wooded, tumbling hills of Swope Park, and his routing rides the contours with the bold greens and bunkering that made his name at Winged Foot and Bethpage. It is hilly, characterful and a genuine bargain, the best walk up round in the metro and a must for anyone who values classic design.
Tiffany Greens Golf Club
A polished Robert Trent Jones Jr design just off I-29 near Kansas City International, Tiffany Greens is a par 72 of around 7,034 yards and a former host of the Champions Tour. Water guards several greens, the bunkering is strategic and the conditioning is consistently strong. It is the metro's most complete modern championship test and an easy, high quality public round close to the airport.
The National Golf Club of Kansas City
Hometown legend Tom Watson shaped the golf at The National, north of the river at Parkville. The Championship course is a private members layout of real quality, while its companion public course lets visitors sample the property and the Watson touch. For pedigree and the local connection to one of the game's greats, it earns a place near the top, with access the only caveat.
Sycamore Ridge Golf Club
One of the best public courses on the Kansas side, Sycamore Ridge pairs bentgrass tee to green with white sand bunkering and an interesting, well conditioned routing south of the city in Spring Hill. It plays firmer and more strategic than most metro daily fee courses and has long held a reputation as a premier visitor round in the area.
Dub's Dread Golf Club
A piece of golf history, Dub's Dread was laid out by the great amateur and tour player Jug McSpaden and once measured among the longest courses in the world. Restored and still a stout public test, it is a beefy, honest parkland course with a story, and a fun, affordable round for a group wanting a slice of Kansas City golf lore.
The Golf Club at Falcon Lakes
A Jay Morrish links style design west of the city at Basehor, Falcon Lakes brings rumpled fairways, native grasses and clever green complexes to the Kansas plains. It is a change of pace from the tree lined parkland that dominates the metro, well kept and good value, and a worthwhile detour for golfers who enjoy a more open, ground game test.
Shoal Creek Golf Course
A popular city owned course in the Shoal Creek valley on the northeast side, this is reliable, accessible public golf with mature trees, creek crossings and fair conditioning at a friendly price. It is not the most dramatic round in the metro, but it is consistently in good shape and one of the better municipal options for a casual group day.
Painted Hills Golf Club
A historic Kansas City, Kansas course that opened in 1929 as Victory Hills and reopened as Painted Hills after a 1990s redesign. Gently rolling, tree lined fairways and contoured bentgrass greens make it a pleasant, walkable nine and eighteen, with a sense of local heritage and an easygoing price that rounds out the metro's public lineup.
Designers, opening years and access verified June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk from the clubs and recognized course databases. Most courses here are public or semi private; the Championship course at The National is private. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking.
