The Best Golf Courses in Gran Canaria

A continent in miniature, Gran Canaria pairs reliable winter sun with a small but varied set of golf courses, from a dramatic desert layout in the south west to Spain's oldest club beside a volcanic crater. It is one of Europe's best cold weather golf escapes. Here are the six courses we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Gran Canaria is a winter sun golf destination first, and its appeal is the climate as much as the courses: warm, dry days in the depths of the European winter, on an island small enough to combine golf with mountains, dunes and the beach in a single trip. The golf is concentrated in the sunny south around Maspalomas, Meloneras and the valley at Tauro, with one historic exception inland in the north. The range is wide for so few courses, from a desert-style layout to a links-flavoured seaside course and a heritage club beside a crater.

We weighed design quality, setting, conditioning and how the courses fit a relaxed winter golf week, which is how the island is best played. These are resort and members courses that welcome visitors and book easily, busiest and dearest in the European winter high season. Every designer, year and detail was checked at the time of writing. The order and the verdicts are our editors' view, so reasonable people will reorder the field. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Anfi Tauro Golf

desert-style · par 72 · south west valley

The island's signature course and unlike anything else in the Canaries, a striking desert-style layout carved into a dramatic valley in the south west that feels closer to Arizona than the Atlantic. Wide, immaculately conditioned fairways are framed by rugged mountains and palm trees, with water and bold bunkering supplying the challenge. It is the most memorable round on Gran Canaria and the natural centrepiece of a golf trip, with the Anfi resort and the beaches of Mogan close by.

02

Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas

Mackenzie Ross · founded 1891 · Bandama

Spain's oldest golf club, founded by British traders in 1891 and now set inland at Bandama above Las Palmas, where a Philip Mackenzie Ross layout perches beside the spectacular Caldera de Bandama volcanic crater. The history, the cooler upland air and the views over central Gran Canaria and the north coast make it a special and characterful round, a complete contrast to the resort courses of the south. A piece of golfing heritage well worth the drive north.

03

Meloneras Golf by Lopesan

Roy Kirby · par 71 · Maspalomas coast

The most convenient golf for a southern beach holiday, a Roy Kirby parkland course set right by the ocean near Maspalomas with the harbour of Pasito Blanco on one side and the Canary mountains on the other. The back nine in particular runs close to the sea, and the course is modern, well kept and enjoyable for all standards. With the Lopesan resorts of Meloneras on the doorstep, it is the easy choice for a relaxed round between days on the beach.

04

Salobre Golf, Old Course

Roland Favre · par 71 · south coast

A Roland Favre design that winds through the ravines and volcanic terrain typical of the south, the more strategic of the two courses at the 36 hole Salobre resort. Narrow fairways, elevated greens and the rugged landscape reward course management over aggression, making it a satisfying test for the better player, with mountain and ocean views throughout. Paired with the resort's newer course it gives a group plenty of golf at one comfortable south coast base.

05

Maspalomas Golf

Mackenzie Ross · 1968 · Maspalomas dunes

A Mackenzie Ross design from 1968 in a privileged position beside the famous Maspalomas dunes nature reserve, the closest course to the resort heart of the south. Flat, mature and walkable, with the great sand sea right alongside, it is an easy, pleasant round steeped in the early history of golf tourism on the island. Less dramatic than Anfi Tauro, but its setting on the edge of the dunes and its convenience keep it a firm favourite with visitors.

06

El Cortijo Club de Campo

Stirling & Martin · par 73 · near Telde

A well regarded parkland course designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin in the district of Telde, around twenty minutes from Las Palmas and roughly midway between the north and the southern resorts. Longer and more traditional than the coastal courses, with mature trees and water, it makes a good change of pace and a convenient stop for golfers based near the capital or the airport. A solid, enjoyable round that rounds out the island's options.

Gran Canaria golf questions

What is the best golf course in Gran Canaria?

Anfi Tauro is the standout, a striking desert-style course carved into a dramatic valley in the south west that feels closer to Arizona than the Atlantic. Spain's oldest club, Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas at Bandama, runs it close for history and setting beside a volcanic crater. Most golf trips to the island are built around one or both.

Where are the golf courses in Gran Canaria?

Most of the island's courses are in the sunny south, around the resorts of Maspalomas and Meloneras and the valley at Tauro, within easy reach of the main hotels. Spain's oldest club sits inland at Bandama above Las Palmas in the north, and El Cortijo lies near Telde in between. The south suits most golf holidays.

When is the best time to play golf in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria plays year round in a warm, dry subtropical climate, which makes it a prime winter sun golf destination from November to April when northern Europe is cold. Summers are hot but tempered by the trade winds. The island is busiest and dearest in the European winter, so book the marquee courses well ahead.
