Whistling Straits vs Blackwolf Run
Fifteen minutes apart at the same Wisconsin resort, these two are Pete Dye's twin masterworks for Kohler. Whistling Straits is the showpiece: a walking only links on the bluffs of Lake Michigan that has hosted three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup. Blackwolf Run is the quieter sibling, a river and woodland Dye that is cheaper, cart friendly and arguably more fun day to day. We priced both at 2026 rates, and on a Kohler trip you should play both.

The verdict
If you are flying to Wisconsin for one round, make it the Straits at Whistling Straits. Pete Dye built it in 1998 to look like an ancient Irish links dropped onto two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, with hundreds of bunkers, blind shots, grazing sheep and a par 72 that stretches to around 7,790 yards. The record backs the theater: PGA Championships in 2004, 2010 and 2015, the 2007 US Senior Open, and the 2021 Ryder Cup, where the United States routed Europe. It is walking only, caddie or carry, and the walk along the bluff is half the point. This is the bucket list round.
But the local secret is Blackwolf Run, fifteen minutes inland in Kohler itself. Dye's original Kohler project from 1988, it runs two courses along the Sheboygan River, the River and Meadow Valleys, through hardwoods and over bluffs above the water. The River Course, a par 72 of about 7,404 yards, hosted the United States Women's Open in 1998 and 2012 and is, hole for hole, as good a test as the Straits, with carts allowed, a gentler price and far fewer crowds. The verdict: the Straits for the spectacle and the major venue aura, Blackwolf Run for value and the better everyday golf, and since they share a resort, the right answer is a stay and play that takes in both.

Who should pick which

It rewards the player who wants drama, wind and a genuine championship test, and who is happy to walk. Pair it with the inland Irish course next door for a full day at Whistling Straits, then read our Whistling Straits vs Erin Hills comparison for the other great Wisconsin major venue an hour south.
