Madeira vs the Canary Islands: Which Golf Trip Wins?

Two Atlantic island escapes a few hundred miles apart, both sold on winter sun, both reachable in around four hours from the UK, and built for completely different trips. The Canaries are a volume play: twenty plus courses, dependable southern sunshine and golf hotels at scale. Madeira is a boutique one: two celebrated mountain courses, a cliff edge island across the water, and the prettiest setting in Atlantic golf. Verdict first.

The verdict

For a golf first winter week, book the Canaries. The numbers are not close: more than twenty courses spread across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, anchored by Abama's banana grove amphitheater above the Atlantic, with the dunes of Maspalomas, the reworked valleys of Salobre and a long supporting cast in the 46 to 120 euro bracket. Add the most reliable winter sunshine in Europe on the southern coasts and a deep stock of golf hotels, and the Canaries are simply built for the job.

Madeira is the better short break, and the more beautiful one. Santo da Serra hangs its famous holes off a mountainside 600 meters above the ocean, Palheiro looks down over Funchal bay from its gardens, and Porto Santo adds a wild card across the water. You will not fill six golf days easily, and the weather is greener and moodier than the Canarian south, but as a three round trip wrapped in levada walks, poncha and one of Europe's great small capitals, Madeira lingers longer in the memory. Pick the Canaries for the golf week, Madeira for the golf holiday.

Who should pick which

Pick Madeira if

You want the trip to feel like a holiday that happens to include golf. Three rounds, Santo da Serra in the clouds, Palheiro above the bay, perhaps the ferry or short hop to Porto Santo, leave room for the levadas, the old town of Funchal and long lunches. Fees are gentle, the scenery is the best in Atlantic golf, and a 3 to 4 night break covers it properly. Couples especially rarely regret choosing Madeira.

Pick the Canaries if

You are a group booking a proper midwinter golf week and the weather cannot be allowed to fail. The southern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria deliver day after dependable day from November to March, the course stock runs deep enough to play six different layouts without a repeat, and the spread runs from 46 euro value golf to Abama's flagship experience. Logistics are easy and the winter flight schedule is enormous.

Madeira vs Canary Islands questions

Is golf better in Madeira or the Canary Islands?

For a full golf week, the Canary Islands win on numbers alone: more than twenty courses across Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura against Madeira's two celebrated mainland island courses, Santo da Serra and Palheiro, plus Porto Santo across the water. The Canaries also hold the bigger names, led by Abama in Tenerife. Madeira wins on scenery, charm and price for a short break where golf shares the bill with the island itself.

How much are green fees in Madeira and the Canary Islands in 2026?

Indicative 2026 fees in Madeira start around 80 to 110 euro at Palheiro and Santo da Serra. In the Canaries the spread is wider: many good courses sit between roughly 46 and 120 euro, including Maspalomas, Salobre, Golf Costa Adeje and Golf del Sur, while Abama, the islands' flagship, runs about 175 to 260 euro by season with a buggy included. Always confirm directly before booking.

Which has better winter weather for golf?

The Canaries, and it is the main reason to choose them. The southern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria are among the most dependable winter golf climates in Europe, with daytime highs of roughly 18 to 24 Celsius and little rain. Madeira is mild year round too, but it is a greener, cloudier, showerier island, especially in the north, and its golf sits at altitude where mist can roll through. Always confirm conditions seasonally.

How long are the flights from the UK?

Madeira is around four hours from London and the Canaries around four and a half, with both served by direct flights from most UK airports through the winter. Neither has a time difference with the UK, and transfer times are short: most Canarian golf sits within 30 to 45 minutes of the southern airports, and Madeira's two courses are within about half an hour of Funchal.
