East Lothian vs Fife for Golf
Two stretches of Scottish coast, two of the densest concentrations of links golf on earth, an hour apart across the Firth of Forth. East Lothian is Scotland's Golf Coast, more than twenty links inside twenty miles, crowned by Muirfield and the gloriously quirky North Berwick. Fife is the Home of Golf itself, with the Old Course at St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie on one shore. Here is the head to head, with our verdict up front.

Our verdict
For the pilgrimage, Fife wins and it is not close. There is one Old Course at St Andrews and one Home of Golf, and standing on the Swilcan Bridge is a thing every travelling golfer should do once. Add Kingsbarns and Clive Clark's modern Dumbarnie a short drive south, plus Crail and Elie, and Fife gives you the most famous links round in the world inside a compact, walkable town that lives and breathes the game.
But for the best week of golf per mile, East Lothian is the connoisseur's pick. From a base in Gullane or North Berwick you can play Muirfield, North Berwick's West Links, all three Gullane courses, the Renaissance Club, Dunbar, Craigielaw and Archerfield without ever driving more than twenty minutes, and tee times beyond Muirfield are far easier to secure than St Andrews in season. Quieter, more varied, and arguably the better pure golf trip. Most golfers with the time do both.

Who should pick which
Pick East Lothian if
You want the most golf for the fewest miles, a different great links every morning, and a base where you walk to the first tee. The variety is the draw: Muirfield's stern test, North Berwick's blind shots and walls, the Gullane hill, the Renaissance Club that hosts the Scottish Open. Easier tee times than St Andrews and Edinburgh half an hour away seal it for many.
Pick Fife if
You came to play the Old Course and stand on the Swilcan Bridge, and you want the full Home of Golf experience in a town that lives for the game. Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie give Fife two of the finest modern links in Britain, the seven St Andrews courses suit every handicap, and the sense of occasion is unmatched. Plan the Old Course ballot well ahead.
Or do both
The smartest Scottish links trip rarely chooses. East Lothian and Fife sit barely an hour apart by road over the Forth bridges, share the same season and the same fast running turf, and complement each other perfectly: open with three or four days on the Golf Coast around Gullane and North Berwick, then cross to St Andrews for the Old Course, Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie to finish. Edinburgh airport sits neatly between the two. Tell us the dates and the must play list and we will route the week.
Plan your Scotland golf trip
Tell us which coast pulls you, the density of East Lothian, the history of Fife, or a week that takes in both, and roughly when. One concierge handles the Old Course ballot, the Muirfield day and every tee time, and costs the trip to the head, with no obligation.
East Lothian vs Fife questions
Is East Lothian or Fife better for golf?
Both are world class and they suit different trips. East Lothian, Scotland's Golf Coast, packs more than twenty links inside twenty miles, led by Muirfield and North Berwick, with easier tee access and Edinburgh on the doorstep. Fife is the Home of Golf, built around the Old Course at St Andrews with Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie alongside. For sheer density choose East Lothian; for the pilgrimage choose Fife. With a week, do both.
How much does it cost to play the best courses in East Lothian and Fife?
Indicatively in the 2026 high season, Muirfield is around 395 pounds, North Berwick roughly 200 to 250, the Old Course at St Andrews around 340 and Kingsbarns roughly 399 to 486. The supporting links cost far less. All figures change by season and are best confirmed directly before booking.
Can you play Muirfield and the Old Course on the same trip?
Yes, and many do. The two sit about an hour apart across the Firth of Forth. Muirfield admits visitors only on Tuesdays and Thursdays and books out early, while the Old Course runs a daily ballot, so the trick is to anchor the week around those two dates and fill the rest with the easier to book links nearby. We arrange exactly this regularly.
When is the best time for a golf trip to East Lothian or Fife?
May to September brings the longest days and the firmest links, with the tee sheets busiest in July and August. April and October are quieter and better value, and the coastal links drain well enough for golf year round for the hardy. Book Muirfield and the Old Course as far ahead as possible and confirm tee times for your dates.
