Who this trip suits

This is the trip for golf purists and lovers of Golden Age architecture. The sandy belt of heath southwest of London holds the finest collection of heathland courses anywhere, the work of Harry Colt, Herbert Fowler and Willie Park Jnr, on free draining ground that runs firm and true while parkland courses sit soaked. Heather, gorse, pine and birch frame every shot, and the names read like a roll of honour: Sunningdale, Wentworth, Walton Heath, the intensely private Swinley Forest and The Berkshire.

It suits buddies trips and society groups who value heritage clubs over resort golf, and who enjoy the formality and the etiquette of a great members club. The clustering is the magic: most of these courses sit within twenty minutes of each other around Sunningdale, Virginia Water and Ascot, so you can play a different masterpiece each morning and never face a long drive.

It is the easiest world class golf trip to combine with a city, because London, Windsor and Ascot are on the doorstep, and international visitors land at Heathrow barely twenty minutes away. The one thing it demands is planning, because access, not money, is the binding constraint at these private clubs.

The courses to build around

Wentworth Club West Course heathland fairway in Surrey, England

Wentworth, West Course

Harry Colt, 1926 · Par 72 · Virginia Water

The Burma Road, host of the BMW PGA Championship and twice redesigned by Ernie Els, a long, demanding, tree lined heathland test. Effectively members and guests only, but the centrepiece of the cluster and the household name of the region.

Sunningdale, Old and New

Park Jnr 1901 and Colt 1923 · Par 70 · Berkshire

The Old course helped define inland heathland golf, finishing beneath a vast spreading oak by the clubhouse, while the Colt New is more open and arguably tougher. Together they are among the finest 36 hole pairings in golf.

Walton Heath, Old Course

Herbert Fowler, 1904 · Par 72 · Tadworth

True open, windswept common land heathland, host of the 1981 Ryder Cup and the 2023 AIG Women's Open. The outlier of the group to the east, and worth the short detour for its raw, exposed character.

Swinley Forest

Harry Colt, 1909 · Par 69 · Ascot

Colt's own self deprecating favourite, widely cited as the best short course in golf, with five outstanding par 3s through the pines. Intensely private and among the hardest tee times in England to secure, which makes it the trip's prize.

The Berkshire, Red and Blue

Herbert Fowler, 1928 · Two courses · Ascot

Two Fowler courses on Crown Estate heathland, the Red famous for its unusual run of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s, both threaded through pine, heather and birch. A favourite for a relaxed 36 hole day in the heart of the cluster.

Designers, opening years and pars verified June 2026 from the clubs and leading course databases. All are private members clubs and visitor access is arranged in advance, with Wentworth and Swinley Forest effectively member introduction only. Green fees are indicative for the 2026 season and change with the day and demand. Always confirm directly before booking.

A sample three round heathland trip

Day 1

Arrive and The Berkshire

Settle into a hotel around Ascot or Sunningdale, twenty minutes from Heathrow. An afternoon round on The Berkshire Red to find the rhythm of heathland golf, then dinner nearby.

Day 2

Sunningdale, Old and New

The heart of the trip, a 36 hole day across the two Sunningdale courses, lunch in the famous halfway hut between rounds. A short walk through pure Golden Age design.

Day 3

Swinley Forest or Wentworth

If access is secured, the private gem at Swinley Forest, or the championship West at Wentworth a few minutes away. An evening in Windsor or London to finish.

Add a day

Walton Heath

For a fourth round, the windswept Old course at Walton Heath, about forty minutes east, gives the trip its most open, exposed and historic links like heathland.

The core cluster around Sunningdale, Virginia Water and Ascot is about 20 minutes from Heathrow and 45 to 60 minutes from central London. Sunningdale and Wentworth are five to ten minutes apart, with Walton Heath the outlier about forty minutes east.

Best time to go and to book

The free draining sandy heathland plays well much of the year, which is part of its appeal, but late spring and early summer from May to June are prime, with firm turf, the heather greening and long daylight. August brings the heather into purple bloom, and autumn adds the pine, birch and bracken color that makes the region so photogenic. Winter is playable thanks to the drainage, but daylight is short and visitor access is more restricted. Book months ahead through a specialist, because some clubs publish full visitor diaries a year out and access is the thing to lock before anything else.
