Northwest Ireland Golf Holidays

Ireland's last great links frontier, through Donegal and Sligo, where huge natural dunes courses run almost empty along the Atlantic. Led by Tom Doak's St Patrick's Links at Rosapenna, it is the connoisseur's links trip, and one concierge can route the whole of it.

Who this trip suits

A northwest Ireland golf holiday is for the links purist who wants the raw, natural golf of the southwest without the crowds or the prices. Through Donegal and Sligo, an Atlantic coastline of giant dunes hides some of the most natural links land in the game, and a tee sheet that rarely feels busy. The headline is Rosapenna, where Tom Doak's St Patrick's Links opened in 2021 to immediate acclaim beside the resort's older Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills courses, but the depth runs far beyond it, with County Sligo at Rosses Point and the towering dunes of Enniscrone among the finest links in Ireland.

It suits the group that values the golf and the scenery over the bar bill, the couple that wants space and wild beauty, and the seasoned links traveler ticking off the courses the marquee tours miss. Base around north Donegal for Rosapenna and Ballyliffin, and around Sligo for Rosses Point and Enniscrone, and you have a week of big, scenic, value links golf with the drives as memorable as the rounds.

The courses to build around

St Patrick's Links at Rosapenna, scaled dunes above Sheephaven Bay, Donegal, Ireland

Rosapenna, St Patrick's Links

Tom Doak 2021 · Links · Downings, County Donegal

Tom Doak's first design in Ireland, opened in 2021 on a vast site of dormant dunes along Sheephaven Bay, and an instant world top entry. Big, bold and natural, it anchors a stay at Rosapenna, where the Old Tom Morris and Pat Ruddy designed Sandy Hills links complete a three course resort.

County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point, links beneath Benbulben, Sligo, Ireland

County Sligo, Rosses Point

Classic links · Beneath Benbulben · County Sligo

The grand old links of the northwest at Rosses Point, running beneath the flat topped mountain of Benbulben with views over Sligo Bay. A championship layout of real pedigree and one of Ireland's most loved links, it is the natural base for the Sligo half of the trip.

Enniscrone Golf Club, towering dunes on the Sligo coast, Ireland

Enniscrone

Big dunes links · Killala Bay · County Sligo

A thrilling links through some of the largest dunes in Ireland on the shore of Killala Bay, a short drive from Rosses Point. Wild, hilly and hugely enjoyable, Enniscrone is the kind of course that turns a good trip into a great one and rounds out the Sligo cluster.

Ballyliffin Golf Club on the Inishowen peninsula, north Donegal, Ireland

Ballyliffin

Two links courses · Inishowen peninsula · County Donegal

Ireland's most northerly club, with two outstanding links, the Glashedy and the rumpled Old Links, on the remote Inishowen peninsula. A fitting addition to a north Donegal week, it pairs naturally with Rosapenna for a two day stay at the top of the country.

Day 5

Best time to book

May to September is the prime window for the longest days, the firmest links turf and the warmest weather, though the Atlantic coast is exposed and wind and rain are always in play. Late spring and early autumn are quieter still and softer on rates, and the northwest rarely feels crowded at any time. Book Rosapenna and County Sligo ahead in peak summer, but compared with the marquee links elsewhere the region is far easier on the tee sheet, which is a large part of its appeal.

Northwest Ireland golf holiday questions

What is the golf like in northwest Ireland?

The northwest, through Donegal and Sligo, is Ireland's last great links frontier, a coastline of huge dunes courses with a fraction of the crowds of the southwest. The headline is Rosapenna, home to Tom Doak's St Patrick's Links from 2021 alongside the Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills layouts, with County Sligo and Enniscrone close behind. It suits the links purist who wants raw golf, space and value.

Which courses should a trip include?

Build around Rosapenna in Donegal, where Tom Doak's St Patrick's Links opened in 2021 beside the Old Tom Morris and Sandy Hills links. Add County Sligo at Rosses Point and the huge dunes of Enniscrone, and consider Ballyliffin on the Inishowen peninsula for a fuller Donegal week.

How do you get there?

Most golfers fly into Dublin and drive northwest, around three hours to Sligo and a little more to north Donegal, or use City of Derry or Knock to shorten the final leg. A hire car or a driver is essential, since the courses are spread along a rural coastline and the scenery is part of the trip.

When is the best time to play?

May to September is the prime window for long days, firm turf and warm weather, though the Atlantic coast is exposed and wind and rain are always possible. Late spring and early autumn are quieter and softer on rates. Book Rosapenna and County Sligo ahead in peak summer, but the northwest is far easier on the tee sheet than the marquee links elsewhere.
