Couples Golf Trips to Wales

A Ryder Cup resort with a spa, two of Britain's great links a short drive apart, and castles, coast and country house dining in between. Wales is built for two golfers, or one golfer and a willing partner.

Who this trip suits

A couples golf trip works in Wales because the golf and everything around it share the same compact, unhurried country. Base yourselves at a resort like Celtic Manor and you have a championship course, a spa, several restaurants and a hotel under one roof, so the non playing half of the partnership is as well looked after as the player. Add a links day on the coast and an afternoon among the castles of the south and you have a balanced few days rather than a golf march.

It suits couples who both play and want contrast, a manicured Ryder Cup test one day and raw links the next, as much as it suits the pair where one plays and one prefers the spa, the beach at Rhossili or the tasting menu. Distances are short, the welcome is warm, and a long weekend is enough to feel you have seen the best of it without rushing.

The courses to build around

The Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales

Celtic Manor, the Twenty Ten

European Golf Design, 2007 · Par 71 · 2010 Ryder Cup host

The first course in history purpose built for a Ryder Cup, and the stage for Europe's win in 2010. Water laced holes run along the floor of the Usk valley, framed by grandstand mounding. The resort wraps a spa, several hotels and restaurants around it, which is exactly why it anchors a couples trip.

Royal Porthcawl links along the Bristol Channel, south Wales

Royal Porthcawl

Links, founded 1891 · Indicative 2026 peak fee around £275

Wales's premier links and one of the finest in Britain, with the sea in view from every hole along the Bristol Channel. It has hosted the Senior Open and the Walker Cup, and it commands the highest green fee in the country. Firm, windswept and serious, it is the round the golfer in the couple will talk about for years.

Royal St David's links beneath Harlech Castle on the Snowdonia coast, Wales

Royal St David's, Harlech

Links, founded 1894 · Par 69 · Beneath Harlech Castle

A natural links spread on the flat land below the walls of Harlech Castle, with Snowdonia rising behind. It plays as a stern par 69 and ranks among the great short courses anywhere. The setting, castle on one side and Cardigan Bay on the other, makes it the most photogenic round of the trip for both of you.

A sample three night, two round couples trip

Day 1

Arrive at Celtic Manor

Settle into the resort above Newport, an hour from Cardiff Airport or two from Bristol. Spa in the afternoon, dinner in one of the resort restaurants, and an early night before golf.

Day 2

The Twenty Ten, then the spa

Play the Ryder Cup course in the morning while your partner takes the spa or the Forum pool. Meet for a late lunch on the terrace, then drive the short hop to Cardiff for the evening.

Day 3

Royal Porthcawl by the sea

A links morning on the Bristol Channel, forty minutes west, then an afternoon along the Gower coast, Three Cliffs Bay and a clifftop walk before a seafood dinner in Mumbles.

Day 4

Castles, or one more round

Cap it with Caerphilly or Cardiff Castle and the shops of the arcades, or slip in a quieter round at The Vale or Pyle and Kenfig before the flight home.

Drive times across south Wales are short, typically thirty to sixty minutes between the resort, the coast and the city. Adding Royal St David's at Harlech is a scenic two hour drive north into Snowdonia for a longer trip.

Best time to book

The Welsh golf season runs April to October, with the most reliable weather and longest evenings from late May to early September. The links play firm and fast in a dry spell, and the long summer light leaves plenty of time for a spa afternoon or a coastal drive after a morning round.

Book Celtic Manor and Royal Porthcawl four to eight weeks ahead in peak summer, especially for weekend tee times, and ask us to route the non golf afternoons so neither half of the couple is left waiting.
