Causeway Coast Golf Holidays

A short stretch of the Antrim and Londonderry coast holds three of the finest links in the British Isles, crowned by Royal Portrush, twice an Open venue in recent years. For a links trip with no long drives and the Giant's Causeway on the doorstep, nowhere is more concentrated.

Who this trip suits

A Causeway Coast golf holiday suits players who want world class links golf without the travel between rounds. Royal Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock sit within a few miles of one another along one of the most dramatic coastlines in golf, so you can play a great links every morning and still be back for lunch. It is a trip built for golfers first, the kind of week a serious group remembers for years.

It works equally for a buddies tour and for a couple who pair the golf with the wider coast: the Giant's Causeway, the Bushmills distillery, the ruined castles and the cliff walks. The links are firm, fast and exposed to the Atlantic wind, so the golf has bite, but the welcome is warm and the towns of Portrush and Portstewart are easy bases.

The courses to build it around

Royal Portrush, Dunluce Links

The jewel of Irish links and an Open Championship venue in 2019 and again in 2025, the Dunluce was reshaped by Harry Colt and runs hard along the cliffs above the Atlantic. Calamity Corner and the closing stretch are among the most demanding in championship golf, and it is the round the whole trip is built around.

Royal Portrush, Valley Links

Portrush's second course shares the same magnificent duneland and is a serious test in its own right, quieter, more sheltered in places and far more affordable than the Dunluce. A perfect second round on a Portrush day.

Portstewart, Strand Course

A few minutes west, the Strand opens with one of the most thrilling front nines in links golf, plunging through towering dunes above the River Bann. Long underrated, it is now firmly among the top links in Ireland.

Castlerock, Mussenden

Often overlooked beside its famous neighbours, Castlerock's Mussenden links is a tough par 73 with roots over a century deep, shaped over time by Ben Sayers and Harry Colt. A genuine links worth a full day.

The coast itself

Between rounds the Causeway Coast delivers: the Giant's Causeway, the Carrick a Rede rope bridge, Dunluce Castle and the Bushmills distillery, all within a short drive of the first tee.

Where to base

Portrush and Portstewart put you within minutes of every course, with comfortable hotels, good seafood and the links on the doorstep, so the car barely moves all week.

Course facts verified June 2026 from the clubs, the R and A and recognized course databases. Royal Portrush hosted the Open Championship in 2019 and again in 2025; the Dunluce Links carries a Harry Colt redesign, and Castlerock's Mussenden was shaped over time by Ben Sayers and Harry Colt. Access, conditioning and green fees change, so always confirm with each club before booking.

Royal Portrush visitor tee times go quickly and the Dunluce sells out months ahead, so book the headline rounds 6 to 12 months in advance and build the rest of the week around them. Causeway Coast golf questions

What courses make up a Causeway Coast golf trip?

The core three are Royal Portrush, with its Dunluce and Valley links, Portstewart's Strand Course and Castlerock's Mussenden links, all within a few miles of one another. Many trips add Ballyliffin or Ballycastle nearby, but those three are the heart of the Causeway Coast and can all be played from a single base.

How much does it cost to play Royal Portrush?

The Dunluce Links peak visitor green fee is around 420 pounds for the 2026 season, with the Valley Links at about 200 pounds, both published by the club for 1 April to 31 October 2026. Portstewart and Castlerock are lower. Figures are indicative and always confirm directly before booking.

When is the best time for a Causeway Coast golf holiday?

May to September gives the warmest and driest links golf, with long northern evenings for extra rounds. Spring and autumn are quieter and still very playable, though the Atlantic wind is a factor all year. Mid summer is busiest, so book early.

Do I need a handicap to play Royal Portrush?

Royal Portrush asks visitors to be members of recognized clubs and may request a handicap certificate, with limits applied on the Dunluce in particular. Confirm the current handicap and dress requirements with the club when you book, as they are updated from time to time.
