One country, several climates
France is large enough to span three golf climates, so there is no single answer to when you should go. Across most of the country the season runs from roughly April to October, peaking from June to September when the days are long and warm and the courses are at their best. The deep north and the Paris region follow a temperate pattern with cool, wet winters; the Atlantic southwest around Biarritz is mild and a touch wetter; and the Mediterranean south, the Cote d'Azur and Provence, is the warmest and driest, with golf that often runs straight through the winter.
What you choose to play decides the calendar. For Le Golf National's Albatros near Paris, host of the 2018 Ryder Cup and the 2024 Olympic golf, the sweet months are June and July when temperatures sit around 23 degrees Celsius. For the Atlantic dunes at Hossegor, Seignosse and Chiberta, spring and early autumn are kindest. And for the Riviera courses such as Terre Blanche and Royal Mougins, the off season many other places dread, November to March, is exactly when the south comes into its own.
Spring, April to May
The season opens. April can still be cool and changeable in the north and on the Atlantic, around 12 to 17 degrees Celsius, but the courses are greening up and the south is already fine. By May the weather warms and settles into reliable golfing conditions countrywide, and it is one of the best value windows before the summer peak.
Summer, June to September
Prime time, with long daylight and courses in peak condition. June and September are the pick, warm but not punishing. July and August turn hot, especially in the south, and overlap the French holidays, so resorts and the coast are busiest and tee times tighten. Book ahead, play early, and carry water on inland courses in the heat.
Autumn and winter, October to March
October is a fine, quieter shoulder before the north closes in. From November, inland and northern France cool and wet off, but the Riviera keeps going: Provence and the Cote d'Azur stay mild and playable on settled days through winter, which is why the south is the country's true year round golf base.

Our take
For France at its best across the country, target June or September, when the courses are in peak shape, the days are long and the worst of the July and August heat and crowds are off the table. May is the value alternative, reliably pleasant and quiet ahead of the rush. If your trip is built around the Atlantic dunes of the southwest, lean to the same shoulders. And if you want golf in the depth of winter, point the trip at the Riviera, where Terre Blanche and the Mougins courses keep playing while the north sleeps. Use our month by month travel calendar and the France destination guide to pin the exact week, then build the route around the best courses in France.

France golf timing questions
When is the best time to play golf in France?
The French golf season runs from roughly April to October, peaking from June to September with warm, settled days. For the best mix of fine conditions and value, target the shoulder months of May and September, when the weather is pleasant, the courses are in shape and tee sheets and prices ease off the summer high.
Can you play golf in the south of France in winter?
Often, yes. The Cote d'Azur and Provence have a mild Mediterranean winter, so courses around Cannes, Mougins and the Riviera frequently stay open and playable from November to March on settled days, though it is cooler and changeable. Inland and northern France, including Paris, are too cold and wet for reliable winter golf.
Where is the best golf in France?
Three clusters stand out: the Paris region, home to Le Golf National's Albatros, host of the 2018 Ryder Cup, plus Morfontaine and Chantilly; the Atlantic southwest around Biarritz, with Hossegor, Seignosse and Chiberta; and the Riviera, where Terre Blanche and Royal Mougins anchor the warm winter golf.
