Best Time to Play Golf in Austria, 2026

Austria is a short summer golf country with a long winter on the slopes. Get the month right and you trade lift queues for Alpine fairways in their prime. Here is when to go in 2026, and the value window most visitors miss.

The short Alpine season

Austria's golf calendar is shaped by its mountains. The season runs from roughly April to November, far shorter than the Mediterranean countries to the south, and it compresses further the higher you climb. In the high country of Tyrol and Salzburg the courses open late and close early, hostage to snowmelt in spring and the first hard frosts in autumn, while the lower courses of the east and south enjoy a longer, gentler run. For a visiting golfer the lesson is simple: match your month to your region, not the other way round.

The peak runs from June to September, when the days are long, the temperatures sit comfortably in the warm twenties and can touch thirty, and every course in the country is open and in condition. The catch is that this is also the height of the Alpine summer tourist season, so the resorts and the prices are at their busiest. From May through October the weather is generally warm and pleasant with cool evenings, though May into July tends to be the wettest stretch, so a few showers are part of the bargain in early summer.

Spring, April to May

The lower courses wake first. By late April the eastern and southern provinces are playable and the countryside is at its freshest, but the higher Alpine layouts may still be waiting on the snow to clear. May is the first genuinely reliable golf month nationwide and one of the best value windows of the year, before the summer crowds arrive.

Summer, June to September

Prime time. Long daylight, warm days and every course open, with the spectacle of Alpine golf at its best in Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia. Expect company and peak pricing, and plan for the occasional summer thunderstorm in the mountains. Early tee times beat both the heat and the afternoon build up of cloud.

Autumn, September to November

For many planners the sweet spot. From early September into October the weather is stable, the courses are in excellent shape after a full summer, the crowds thin and autumn deals appear at the golf hotels. The colour in the valleys is spectacular. By late October and November the high courses begin to close, leaving the warmer east and south to carry the season to its end.

Our take

If you want Austria at its best with the smallest crowds, go in the first half of September. The summer has firmed and ripened the courses, the high Alpine layouts are still open, the air is clear and the hotel rates have started to soften. May is the value alternative for those who do not need the very highest courses, since the eastern and southern provinces, Burgenland above all, are reliably open and far quieter than midsummer. Save the high country of Tyrol and Salzburg for the heart of summer, when their short season is in full swing, and lean on our month by month travel calendar and the Austria destination guide to pin the exact week. Whatever you do, treat December to March as ski season, not golf season.

Austria golf timing questions

When is the best time to play golf in Austria?

The Austrian golf season runs from roughly April to November. The peak is June to September, when the days are long and warm. For the best blend of conditions and value, target May and the stretch from early September into October, when the weather is stable, the courses are in fine shape and autumn deals appear.

Can you play golf in Austria in winter?

Generally no. From December to February the Alpine courses are closed under snow and Vienna can sit between minus 3 and 3 degrees Celsius. A handful of low lying courses in the warmer east and south, especially in Burgenland, have the longest season and may open in mild spells, but winter is ski season in Austria, not golf season.

Where in Austria has the longest golf season?

The eastern and southern provinces. Burgenland, with its sun drenched, low lying courses, has the longest season in the country, and Carinthia in the south is also mild. Lower Austria around Vienna holds over a quarter of the nation's courses. The high Alpine courses in Tyrol and Salzburg open latest and close earliest.
