4 Day Southwest Ireland Golf Itinerary

A tight long weekend on the great links of the west, flown into Shannon and kept deliberately compact. Three marquee rounds, Lahinch in Clare, then Ballybunion and Tralee in Kerry, with short drives and an easy first evening to settle in. The distilled version of the famous southwest, for golfers short on days but not on ambition.

Who this trip suits

This is the trip for the golfer who has a long weekend rather than a full week, and wants the headline links of the southwest without a punishing drive between every round. By flying into Shannon and staying in Clare and north Kerry, you play three of the finest links in the world, Lahinch, Ballybunion Old and Tralee, on consecutive days with transfers of under an hour and a half. It suits a focused four ball, a couple of keen golfers, or anyone testing the waters before committing to the longer grand tour.

It is also the natural shorter sibling of the full week. Where the seven day version runs the whole coast from Clare down through the Ring of Kerry to the clifftop Old Head near Cork, this compact version trades the long southern leg for simplicity and pace. If you find you want more, Waterville on the Ring of Kerry and Old Head of Kinsale are the obvious additions for a fifth and sixth day.

The 4 day plan

Day 1Arrive

Arrive at Shannon, settle in County Clare

Shannon airport · transfer about 45 minutes · rest day

Fly into Shannon and transfer down the Clare coast to a base near Lahinch or Doonbeg, about 45 minutes away. Settle in, stretch the legs along the beach or the nearby Cliffs of Moher, and ease into the time zone before the golf begins. A relaxed first evening over a pint and some seafood sets the trip up perfectly. Confirm your tee times and the order with your host or planner over dinner.

Day 2Clare

Lahinch, Old Course

Old Tom Morris 1894, Alister MacKenzie 1927 · the St Andrews of Ireland · around 450 euro

Open with the grand old links of the west, laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1894 and given its enduring shape by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1927. Lahinch tumbles through huge dunes with quirks the modern game would never build, the blind par 3 Dell and the humped Klondyke among them, and it is all the better for them. A joyous, characterful start. Indicative 2026 green fees are around 450 euro in high season; play it with a smile and a sense of humour.

Day 3Kerry

Ballybunion, Old Course

Founded 1893, Tom Simpson revision 1937 · Tom Watson's favourite · around 450 euro

Drive south into Kerry, about an hour and a half, for the course many call the finest links in the world, an 1893 layout reshaped by Tom Simpson in 1937 that runs out along the dunes and the Atlantic with hole after hole of pure links drama. Tom Watson called it the best test of links golf he knew, and the stretch along the sea from the seventh is as good as golf gets. Indicative 2026 green fees are around 450 euro in high season; rebase near Ballybunion or Tralee for the night.

Day 4Kerry, depart

Tralee Golf Club, then fly home

Arnold Palmer 1984 · first European Palmer design · around 450 euro

Finish with Tralee, Arnold Palmer's first design in Europe, opened in 1984 on a spectacular stretch of dune and beach at Barrow. The front nine runs gently along the strand, then the back climbs into towering dunes for a thrilling, exposed finish with the Atlantic always in view. Palmer said God built the back nine and he just routed it. Indicative 2026 green fees are around 450 euro in high season; an early tee time leaves the afternoon for the drive back to Shannon or on to Kerry airport for the flight home.

When to go and where to stay

Play the trip from late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, for the best balance of weather, firm links turf and the long northern evenings that let you dine late after golf, accepting peak fees and busy tee sheets, or take the April and October shoulders for lower rates and quieter courses with a little more weather risk. With only four days, split a single move rather than chasing several bases: a couple of nights on the Clare coast near Lahinch or Doonbeg, then one or two near Ballybunion or Tralee for the Kerry rounds and the flight out. A hire car or a private driver is essential on this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way, and leaves the evenings free for the seafood and the pubs. Build the weekend around the Ballybunion and Lahinch tee times and the rest follows.

Plan your southwest Ireland long weekend

Tell us roughly when and who is travelling, and one concierge locks the Lahinch, Ballybunion and Tralee tee times, arranges the car or driver and the bases, and costs the four days to the head. The marquee tee times go early, so the sooner we start the better, with no obligation.

Southwest Ireland itinerary questions

What is the best 4 day golf itinerary in southwest Ireland?

For a tight long weekend from Shannon, play the great Clare and Kerry links over three rounds: open at Lahinch, the St Andrews of Ireland, then drop into Kerry for Ballybunion Old, the course many call the finest links in the world, and finish at the Arnold Palmer designed Tralee. Base in two spots and keep the drives short. Add Waterville or the clifftop Old Head if you have a fifth or sixth day. Always confirm current tee times and fees directly before booking.

How much does a 4 day southwest Ireland golf trip cost in green fees?

Three marquee rounds on this route add up to roughly 1,300 to 1,400 euro per golfer in peak 2026 green fees, with Lahinch, Ballybunion Old and Tralee each around 450 euro in high season. Shoulder season rates and multi round packages bring the total down. These are indicative figures, so always confirm current fees directly before booking.

Is 4 days enough for a golf trip to southwest Ireland?

Yes, four days is enough for a focused links sampler if you keep the geography tight. From Shannon you can comfortably play Lahinch, Ballybunion and Tralee in three rounds with short drives between Clare and north Kerry, leaving the arrival day to settle in. To add the Ring of Kerry's Waterville and the clifftop Old Head near Cork, step up to a six or seven day trip instead.

When is the best time for a southwest Ireland golf trip?

Late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, gives the best balance of weather, daylight and firm links turf, and is the peak season for fees and tee sheets. May, June and September are the sweet spot for long evenings and good conditions. The shoulders of April and October trade some weather risk for lower rates and quieter courses. Book the marquee tee times well ahead and always confirm current seasonal rates directly before booking.
