When to Play Golf in San Diego

San Diego may be America's most forgiving golf climate, mid 60s in January, virtually rainless from April to October, playable every week of the year. But forgiving is not the same as identical: the marine layer turns the coast gray in May and June, the PGA Tour takes over Torrey Pines in late January, and the tee sheets swell all summer. Here is the calendar, month by month, and the windows we would book.

The short answer

The best time to play golf in San Diego is mid September through November. The marine layer that grays out late spring has burned away for the season, the air is warm and dry with highs in the mid 70s easing toward 70, the summer vacation crowds have gone home, and the light over the Torrey Pines bluffs is as good as coastal golf gets. April runs it close as the best of spring: the winter rain has finished, the courses are green, and the gloom has not yet arrived.

The honest second answer is that there is no bad month. San Diego sees roughly ten inches of rain in an average year, nearly all of it between December and March, and even January holds highs in the mid 60s. What changes through the year is not whether you can play but what the day looks like: gray mornings on the coast in May and June, packed tee sheets in July and August, a tournament lockout at Torrey Pines South in late January. Pick your month for the experience you want, then book the tee times early, because the famous ones go fast in every season. Our guide to playing golf in San Diego covers the courses themselves.

What it means for Torrey Pines

The one fixed event on the San Diego golf calendar is the PGA Tour's annual visit to Torrey Pines. The 2026 Farmers Insurance Open ran January 29 to February 1, the final edition under the Farmers name, and from 2027 the tournament continues with Sentry as title sponsor, expected January 27 to 30, 2027. The tour plays both the North and the South, with the South hosting the closing rounds, and the build out of grandstands and hospitality means public access is at its tightest from mid January into early February. If watching world class golf on the bluffs is the point of the trip, that week is magic. If playing is the point, give it a wide berth, or come in February when the ropes come down and the South is still wearing its tournament conditioning.

The city also closes each course briefly twice a year for aerification, the routine punching of the greens that keeps one of America's busiest municipals in championship shape. The City of San Diego publishes the maintenance schedule on its Torrey Pines pages; the work typically falls in the spring and the fall, and greens can putt bumpy for two to three weeks afterward. Before locking flights around a Torrey Pines round, check the maintenance calendar, and read our Bethpage Black vs Torrey Pines comparison for how the booking battle compares to the other great American muni.

Green fees through the year

Here is the quirk that makes San Diego unusual: its headline course barely has a pricing season. Torrey Pines is a City of San Diego municipal, and the rate card runs the calendar year. For 2026, the South Course is $258 on weekdays and $322 on weekends and holidays for nonresidents, the North is $163 and $204, and South twilight runs $156 to $194, plus a $50 per player advance booking fee for nonresidents. Those numbers hold in gray June and golden October alike, so the season shows up as tee time scarcity, not price. The resort courses around the county behave more conventionally, with rates peaking through the winter and spring visitor season and softening in the gloomy late spring shoulder. Full numbers live in our San Diego green fees guide, and the wider state picture is in how to play golf in California. All fees are indicative for 2026; always confirm directly before booking. Hotels follow the same demand curve, so the shoulder months are also when the La Jolla and Del Mar stays get reasonable: compare San Diego hotel rates for your dates.

When to go for what you want

For the postcard trip, the coast in full sunshine and the courses firm and quick, book mid September through November, with April the spring alternative. For value and empty fairways, the May and June gloom window is the local secret: mornings are gray and cool on the coast, but inland courses often sit in sunshine, and the afternoons usually clear everywhere. For tournament atmosphere, build the trip around late January. And in every window, secure the marquee times first; our notes on getting tee times in California and buggies and caddies in California cover the practical side of the booking.

Plan a San Diego golf trip

Tell us roughly when you want to travel and who is in the group, and one concierge times the trip to the season, lines up Torrey Pines and the coastal resorts around the tournament and maintenance calendars, and costs it to the head. The famous tee times go early, so the sooner we start the better, with no obligation.

San Diego golf timing questions

When is the best time to play golf in San Diego?

Mid September through November is the sweet spot: the marine layer is gone, the air is warm and dry, highs sit in the mid 70s easing to around 70, and the summer crowds have left. April is the best of spring. That said, San Diego is genuinely a year round golf city, with highs in the mid 60s even in January and roughly ten inches of rain a year, almost all of it falling December to March. Always confirm current conditions and rates directly before booking.

What are May gray and June gloom?

They are local names for the marine layer, a blanket of low cloud that parks over the San Diego coast on late spring and early summer mornings. It usually burns off by midday or early afternoon, and courses a few miles inland often sit in sunshine while the bluff top coast stays gray. For golfers it means cool, windless, soft conditions in the morning. If you want guaranteed coastal sunshine, plan for September through November instead.

How much does Torrey Pines cost to play in 2026?

On the City of San Diego rate sheet effective January 1, 2026, the South Course is $258 on weekdays and $322 on weekends and holidays for nonresidents, with the North Course at $163 and $204. Nonresidents who book in advance also pay a $50 per player booking fee. The municipal rate card holds all year, so the season shows up in tee time scarcity rather than price. Rates are indicative for 2026; always confirm directly before booking.

When does the PGA Tour play Torrey Pines?

The 2026 Farmers Insurance Open ran January 29 to February 1, 2026, the final edition under the Farmers name. From 2027 the tournament continues with Sentry as title sponsor, expected January 27 to 30, 2027. The tour takes over both courses around tournament week, with build out before and after, so public access at Torrey Pines is at its tightest from mid January into early February. Plan around it or come to watch.
