When to Play Golf in Colorado
Two seasons in one state: the Front Range plays April to October, the high mountain courses squeeze everything into late May to early October. Here is the month by month call, and what altitude does to your yardages.

The verdict
Colorado golf is really two trips wearing one name. Down on the Front Range, Denver and Colorado Springs sit near a mile high, and courses like the Broadmoor, whose East Course opened in 1918 at 6,400 feet as the highest course in America at the time, run a long season, often April clear through October. Up in the resort valleys, Vail, Beaver Creek, Summit County, the season is a sprint: courses typically open from mid to late May as the snow allows and close in early October.
That means the calendar decides your trip more than in almost any other US destination. A June group gets alpine golf and rushing rivers; an April group should stay on the Front Range entirely. The courses themselves are covered in our Colorado golf packages guide; this page is about getting the timing right.
Month by month
| Months | Front Range, Denver and Colorado Springs | Mountain resorts, Vail and Summit County |
|---|---|---|
| November to March | Off season; mild spells open tee sheets for hardy locals, greens dormant | Closed under snow; this is ski season |
| April to mid May | Season opens in earnest; cool mornings, value rates, occasional spring snow days | Still closed or just stirring; do not plan mountain golf yet |
| Late May to June | Prime condition arrives; long days | Courses open with the snowmelt, typically mid May to early June; fresh, fast and spectacular |
| July to August | Hot, dry mornings; afternoon thunderstorms build regularly, so tee off early | Peak season and peak rates; mornings are perfect, afternoons stormy; thin air adds roughly 15 percent to your carries |
| September | The best month: warm days, cool nights, quiet tee sheets after Labor Day | Late season gold; aspens turning, storms fading, courses at their firmest before early October closing |
| October | Playable and cheap until the first real cold; greens slow down late | Closing weeks, usually done by the first or second week |
Season windows are indicative for 2026 and vary year to year with snowpack. Always confirm opening dates and rates directly with the course before booking.
Playing at altitude
The number that changes everything is air density. Tour players figure the ball flies about 10 percent farther in Denver than at sea level, and around 15 percent in the high mountain valleys; it is the reason Castle Pines measured a record 8,130 yards for the BMW Championship. Take one club less on the Front Range and up to two in the mountains, and remember the effect grows with club speed, so drivers gain more than wedges. Hydrate like it is a sport of its own; at 8,000 feet the sun and the thin air dehydrate you long before you feel it.
The second rule is the clock. Summer storms build over the peaks after lunch with impressive punctuality, so the smart Colorado tee time is 8am, through the turn by 11, done by 1. Book mornings, keep afternoons for the pool, the trout stream or the brewery. For where these rules cash out best, start with our Colorado packages page or compare seasons in our summer golf destinations ranking.

Colorado timing questions
What months are Colorado mountain courses open?
Roughly late May to early October, snowmelt depending. Vail area courses typically open mid May in a kind year and close in early October. The Front Range, Denver and Colorado Springs, plays far longer, often April through October and beyond in mild spells.
How much farther does the ball fly in Colorado?
Tour players reckon about 10 percent farther in Denver than at sea level, and around 15 percent in the high mountains. It is why Castle Pines stretched to a record 8,130 yards for the BMW Championship. Take at least one club less and trust the new number.
What is the single best month for a Colorado golf trip?
September. Mountain courses are still open and in their best late season condition, the aspens begin to turn, afternoon storm season has faded and tee sheets loosen after Labor Day. June is the runner up for long days and fresh turf.
Do afternoon thunderstorms really matter in summer?
Yes. In July and August, mountain and Front Range afternoons regularly build brief, electrical storms. Book morning tee times, plan to be through the turn by noon in the high country, and treat any siren seriously; courses clear quickly and resume after the cell passes.
