Golf Dress Code and Course Rules in New York State

New York golf runs from the most famous public course in America to some of the strictest private clubs on earth, and the rules change just as sharply. Bethpage Black makes you walk every one of its seven miles, several state park courses do not even require a collar, and a Westchester private club will expect the full traditional standard. Here is what to wear and how to play it, course type by course type, so nothing surprises you at the first tee.

The New York dress code, in short

The headline is that the public golf a visitor actually plays in New York is some of the most relaxed in the country. The five courses at Bethpage State Park are state run and priced for everyone, and the dress standard reflects it: on the Red Course, for example, collared shirts are not required and sleeveless tops are fine, though denim is not allowed. City munis across the five boroughs, Buffalo and Rochester run to a similar standard. A clean T shirt and athletic shorts will rarely be challenged, but denim is the one item that gets refused surprisingly often, so leave it in the car.

The picture flips completely at the other end of the market. Long Island and Westchester hold one of the densest collections of elite private clubs in world golf, and if you are lucky enough to be invited as a guest, the standard is the strictest you will meet anywhere: collared shirt tucked in, tailored trousers or knee length shorts, no denim or athletic wear of any kind, caps off and often a jacket indoors. Resort courses sit in between. Turning Stone, the upstate resort whose Atunyote course hosted PGA Tour golf, asks simply for appropriate golf attire, which in practice means the usual collared shirt and tailored shorts or trousers.

What to pack

One outfit covers the whole state: a collared golf shirt, tailored shorts for summer, trousers for the shoulder months, golf shoes with soft spikes and a rain layer. New York summers are hot and humid, and the season's edges in April and late October can be near freezing at dawn, so pack for both. Metal spikes are effectively gone statewide.

State park coursesRelaxed. On several Bethpage courses a collar is not required and sleeveless tops are permitted, but denim is not allowed. Golf or athletic shoes, no metal spikes

On course rules and etiquette

The walking rule at Bethpage Black

The single most important rule in New York golf: Bethpage Black is walking only. No riding carts are permitted except under a medical exemption, so you carry, pull a trolley or take a caddie, and the round covers roughly seven miles of genuinely rolling terrain. The warning sign behind the first tee, advising that the course is recommended only for highly skilled golfers, is not a marketing prop. Train for the walk, take the forward tees seriously, and treat the day as the physical test it is. The park's other four courses allow carts as normal.

Pace of play

New York's public courses are among the busiest in the country, and pace shows it. A summer weekend round on the Black can run well past five hours, and city munis move slowly at peak times. The etiquette is the same everywhere: keep up with the group ahead, be ready when it is your turn, cap a ball search at a few minutes, and wave faster groups through. Booking the first times of the morning is the only reliable cure.

Season, frost and course care

The New York season generally runs from around April to November, and frost delays bracket both ends; an 8am October time can easily become a 10am start, so call ahead. Repair pitch marks, rake bunkers, replace divots and follow each day's posted cart rule at courses that allow them, which after rain often means cart path only. Afternoon thunderstorms close courses quickly in July and August, so clear the fairway when the horn sounds and wait for the all clear.

New York golf rules questions

What is the dress code at New York golf courses?

It depends heavily on the course. The state park and municipal courses that visiting golfers actually play, including the Bethpage courses, are relaxed: a collared shirt is not strictly required on several of them, though denim is commonly barred. Resort courses such as Turning Stone ask for appropriate golf attire, and private clubs in Westchester and on Long Island expect the full traditional standard. Pack a collared shirt and tailored shorts or trousers and you are welcome everywhere.

Can you take a cart at Bethpage Black?

No. Bethpage Black is a walking only course. You carry, take a pull cart or hire a caddie; riding carts are not permitted except under a medical exemption. The walk runs to roughly seven miles over rolling terrain, so it is a genuinely physical day. The other four Bethpage courses allow carts as normal.

Is denim allowed on New York golf courses?

Usually not, even at the relaxed public end. Bethpage Red, one of the most casual of the state park courses, allows shorts and sleeveless tops but not denim, and that pattern repeats across the state. Private and resort courses bar denim outright. Leave the jeans for the evening and you will never have a problem.

When are New York courses open and what is pace of play like?

The season generally runs from around April to November, with frost delays common at each end. The famous public courses are busy, and pace at Bethpage Black on a summer weekend can stretch well past five hours. Book the earliest time you can, keep up with the group ahead, and build slack into the rest of your day.
