Golf in Utah
Red rock cliffs, black lava fields and alpine peaks: Utah is one of the most scenic golf states in America and one of the least expected. The desert courses of Greater Zion around St George, led by Tom Weiskopf's Black Desert, play through the most dramatic scenery in golf, while the Park City mountains run a short, brilliant summer season. The courses that matter, the two seasons, the costs and how to plan a trip.

Why golf in Utah
Utah is golf staged against some of the most spectacular scenery in the United States, and it splits into two very different worlds. In the south, around St George in the Greater Zion region, the courses are carved through red sandstone cliffs and black volcanic rock under a high desert sun, and they have become a genuine destination. The headline arrival is Black Desert Resort in Ivins, the final design of the late Tom Weiskopf, routed across a black lava field with red mountains behind, which opened in 2023 and quickly drew the PGA Tour and the LPGA. Beside it, Sand Hollow's Championship Course runs along a red rock canyon rim that ranks among the most photographed golf in America.
The north is mountain golf. Around Park City and the Wasatch Back, an hour from Salt Lake City, alpine courses such as the Tom Fazio designed Glenwild, the Rees Jones layout at Victory Ranch and the Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye courses at Promontory climb through aspen and pine at altitude, where the thin air sends the ball flying and the season is short and precious. Many of the mountain clubs are private, while the southern desert courses are largely open to the public, which makes Greater Zion the natural focus for a visiting golfer. Two contrasting golf experiences, both unforgettable, in one underrated state.
The regions
St George and Greater Zion
Southern Utah's high desert, the best concentration of dramatic public golf, with Black Desert, Sand Hollow and Entrada beneath red cliffs, and Zion National Park nearby. Year round play.
Park City and the Wasatch Back
The mountain resort heartland an hour from Salt Lake City, with the private alpine courses of Glenwild, Victory Ranch and Promontory amid the aspens. A short summer season.
The Heber Valley
A high green valley next to Park City, home to Red Ledges and its Jack Nicklaus golf, with reservoirs, ranch country and the Wasatch peaks all around.
Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front
The state capital and gateway, with good public courses along the Wasatch Front and the easiest air access through Salt Lake City International for a northern trip.
Moab and the southeast
Red rock canyon country near Arches and Canyonlands, a scenic add on for golfers touring the national parks by car between rounds.
Northern Utah and Ogden
Mountain and valley golf north of Salt Lake City toward the Idaho line, a quieter region of good value courses against the high Wasatch peaks.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| February to May | Warm, dry desert in the south, mountains still snowbound | Prime for St George and Greater Zion |
| June to September | Hot in the south, perfect in the mountains | Park City season; play the south early or late in the day |
| October to November | Mild and golden in the south, mountains closing | Excellent shoulder value in Greater Zion |
| December to January | Cool desert days, deep mountain snow | Southern golf playable, the north closed |

Getting there and around
For the southern desert golf around St George, the easiest gateway is often Las Vegas, about two hours south by car on Interstate 15, which opens up a trip that pairs Utah's red rock courses with the bright lights at one end. St George has its own regional airport with a growing schedule for those who prefer to fly closer. For the northern mountain golf, Salt Lake City International is the hub, a major airport less than an hour from Park City and the Heber Valley. A hire car is essential either way, both to link the courses and to fold in the national parks, Zion and Snow Canyon in the south, the Wasatch and the high lakes in the north, that make Utah such a rewarding drive between rounds.
Where to stay
In the south, base yourself in St George or at one of the destination resorts, Black Desert, Sand Hollow or Entrada, where stay and play keeps the golf and the red rock scenery on your doorstep and Zion within reach for a rest day. In the north, Park City is the natural base, a handsome former mining town turned ski and golf resort with hotels, restaurants and the mountain clubs close by, while the Heber Valley offers a quieter ranch country alternative next door. One planner can match the base to your season, your courses and your group, and pair the golf with the parks.

Utah golf questions
When is the best time to play golf in Utah?
It depends on the region. Southern Utah around St George plays year round in a high desert climate, with spring, roughly February to May, and autumn, October and November, the prime windows, and summer hot but playable with early tee times and lower rates. The mountain courses of Park City and the Wasatch run a short season from about May to October, closed by snow in winter. Plan the south for the cooler months and the north for the summer. Always confirm course opening dates and tee times before you travel.
Which is the best golf course in Utah?
Black Desert Resort in Ivins, near St George, the final design of Tom Weiskopf routed through black lava rock and the host of recent PGA Tour and LPGA events, is now widely rated the number one course in the state and is open to the public. Among the established names, Sand Hollow's Championship Course on the red rock cliffs near Hurricane is a public must play, while Glenwild in Park City, a Tom Fazio design, tops the private rankings.
Is golf in Utah expensive?
It is mid range to premium for the public resort golf and unpublished for the private clubs. Indicatively for 2026, peak season green fees at the marquee public courses such as Black Desert and Sand Hollow's Championship Course sit in the region of 150 to 250 US dollars with a cart, with shoulder and summer rates lower, while the top private clubs around Park City do not publish a visitor fee. A week built around the southern Utah resorts typically lands between 2,500 and 5,000 dollars per head excluding flights. Always confirm directly before booking.
Where should you base a Utah golf trip?
For most visiting golfers, St George in Greater Zion is the natural base, a sunny high desert town with the best concentration of dramatic public courses, the red rock scenery of Zion and Snow Canyon nearby, and easy access from Las Vegas, about two hours south, or its own regional airport. For a summer mountain trip, Park City and the Heber Valley are the base, close to Salt Lake City airport. Always confirm access and tee times before you travel.
