Golf in San Antonio
A warm weather golf city on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, anchored by a PGA Tour stop you can play. TPC San Antonio and the Valero Texas Open headline a deep field of resort, daily fee and historic municipal courses, with the limestone hills, oak groves and a former rock quarry shaping some of the most distinctive golf in the state. The courses that matter, the areas, the season, costs and how to plan it.

Why golf in San Antonio
San Antonio gives the travelling golfer something rare in Texas: a regular PGA Tour course you can actually play. The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, a Greg Norman design at the JW Marriott resort on the city's northern edge, has hosted the Valero Texas Open since 2010, and its Pete Dye sister course, the Canyons, sits right alongside it. That pairing alone is enough to anchor a trip, with two championship layouts and a full resort in one place, twenty minutes from the airport.
Beyond the resort, the city has real depth and real value. The Quarry routes its back nine through an old cement quarry with rock walls a hundred feet high, La Cantera's Resort Course climbs and drops through the Hill Country, and Brackenridge Park, the A.W. Tillinghast municipal that opened in 1916, is the oldest eighteen hole public course in Texas. Add the Hyatt Regency's Arthur Hills course, a clutch of strong daily fee tracks, and easy Hill Country day trips to Kerrville and New Braunfels, and San Antonio works as a warm, walkable base with the River Walk and the Alamo on your doorstep.
The areas
The northern resorts
The heart of San Antonio golf, in the hills north of the city. TPC San Antonio and the JW Marriott, La Cantera, the Quarry, Canyon Springs and the Hyatt Regency cluster here, putting the marquee resort and daily fee courses within a short drive of each other and the airport.
The city and the municipals
Closer in, the historic Brackenridge Park and the city's Alamo City Golf Trail courses offer real golf for modest money, minutes from the River Walk and downtown. The natural base for a city break with golf attached rather than a full resort week.
The Hill Country beyond
West and north of the city the limestone hills open up, with Comanche Trace at Kerrville and the Bandit at New Braunfels an easy day trip away. Twelve months of golf in a remarkable climate, and the natural extension to a San Antonio trip.
The courses that matter
TPC San Antonio, Oaks Course
The Greg Norman design, shaped with input from Sergio Garcia, that has hosted the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open since 2010. A long, oak lined par 72 at the JW Marriott resort, with aggressive bunkering and a demanding closing stretch. The standout round in the city.
TPC San Antonio, Canyons Course
The Pete Dye sister course at the JW Marriott, built with consultation from Bruce Lietzke and a former PGA Tour Champions venue. A more open, links leaning layout than the Oaks, with the trademark Dye angles and a strong stay and play pairing alongside it.
La Cantera Golf Club, Resort Course
The Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf design at the Signia by Hilton resort, a former Valero Texas Open host that ran on Tour from 1995 to 2009. Dramatic Hill Country golf, with an 80 foot drop from the 7th tee and limestone outcrops throughout.
The Quarry Golf Club
One of the most distinctive courses in Texas, built by Keith Foster on the old Alamo Cement site. A links style front nine over rolling grassland gives way to a back nine that drops entirely into the quarry pit, with rock walls over a hundred feet high.
Brackenridge Park Golf Course
The oldest eighteen hole public course in Texas and a member of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, designed by A.W. Tillinghast along the San Antonio River. A walkable, tree lined classic and the historic home of golf in the city.
Hill Country Golf Club at Hyatt Regency
The Arthur Hills design at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort, a scenic 27 hole spread of rolling meadows, lakes and tree shaded plateaus around twenty minutes west of downtown. A reliable resort round that is fully open to the public.
Canyon Springs Golf Club
A Tom Walker design north of the city, routed through a natural Hill Country canyon with mature oaks, elevation change and rock features. One of the most consistently well regarded daily fee courses in the San Antonio area.
Cedar Creek Golf Course
A Finger Dye Spann municipal that delivers resort style Hill Country views at a city course price. Tumbling, tree framed holes through the hills on the northwest side, and a long standing favourite among San Antonio locals for value.
Olympia Hills Golf and Event Center
A Finger Dye Spann layout owned by the city of Universal City, on the northeast side near Randolph. Generous fairways, water in play and a relaxed pace make it a solid everyday round and a good warm up for the marquee courses.
The Bandit Golf Club
Another Keith Foster design, this one at New Braunfels on the Guadalupe River about 40 minutes northeast of the city. A scenic, well priced Hill Country round and an easy day trip or pairing with the river towns north of San Antonio.
The Club at Comanche Trace
Twenty seven holes in the Hill Country at Kerrville, about an hour northwest, with the Hills and Valley nines by Tom Kite and the Creeks nine by Jay and Carter Morrish. Routinely rated among the finest courses in the region, with limited visitor access.
Republic Golf Club
A daily fee course on the southeast side near the airport corridor, reworked by San Antonio's own Lee Trevino. Open, breezy and forgiving off the tee, it rounds out the city's accessible options and pairs well with a downtown base.
Designers, opening years and access verified June 2026 from the courses and leading databases; resort and daily fee access can change by season, and Comanche Trace is a private club with limited visitor play. La Cantera's separate Palmer Course closed permanently in 2021. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| October to April | Warm, dry and settled, the Hill Country at its most comfortable | Peak season; the prime window for a full San Antonio golf trip |
| March to May | Warm and green, wildflowers in the hills before the heat builds | Excellent golf and the busy Valero Texas Open period in spring |
| June to September | Very hot and humid, often above 95F with high afternoon sun | Play early morning; good value but plan firmly around the heat |
| December to February | Mild days, cool mornings and the occasional cold snap | Strong value and very playable, a good cool season escape |
South Texas plays year round, but the summer heat is the thing to plan around. The peak window runs from October to April, when warm, dry days make for the most comfortable golf, while the mild winters offer the best value of the year.

Getting there and around
San Antonio International Airport, code SAT, sits about eight miles north of downtown and, helpfully, right in the middle of the resort golf belt. It is served by the major US carriers with good domestic connections, and most of the marquee courses, TPC San Antonio, La Cantera, the Quarry and the Hyatt Regency, are a short drive from the terminal rather than across the city. A hire car is the practical way to move between the resorts, the downtown municipals and the Hill Country day trips to Kerrville and New Braunfels, and the driving stays sensible throughout. Austin sits about 80 minutes north, an easy pairing if you want to add the Hill Country resorts around the capital.
Where to stay
For a pure golf week, the resorts double as the base: the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country puts both TPC courses on the doorstep, while the Hyatt Regency and the Signia by Hilton at La Cantera each pair a hotel with their own course. For a city break with golf attached, stay downtown near the River Walk and the Alamo and drive out to the courses each morning, which keeps the evenings lively and the rounds varied. Book resort rooms and tee times together for the October to April peak, when both move quickly.
Plan your San Antonio golf trip
Tell us whether you want a resort week around TPC San Antonio and the Hill Country, a downtown city break with golf, or a run at the marquee courses with day trips to Kerrville and New Braunfels, and roughly when. One concierge secures the tee times, sorts the resort and the car, and costs the whole trip to the head, with no obligation.
San Antonio golf questions
What are the best golf courses in San Antonio?
The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, a Greg Norman design that hosts the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open, is the headline round, with the Pete Dye Canyons Course alongside it at the JW Marriott resort. The Quarry, set in a former cement quarry, and La Cantera's Resort Course are the other big resort and daily fee draws, while Brackenridge Park, the A.W. Tillinghast municipal from 1916, is the historic heart of golf in the city.
When is the best time to play golf in San Antonio?
Autumn, from October to November, and spring, from March to May, are the most comfortable, with warm, settled weather and the Hill Country at its best. South Texas summers are very hot and humid, so plan early tee times from June to August. Winters are mild and good value, with golf playable year round and only the occasional cold snap. Always check the forecast for your dates.
Can you play TPC San Antonio?
Yes. Both the Oaks and Canyons courses at TPC San Antonio are resort courses open to the public, attached to the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa. The Oaks Course hosts the Valero Texas Open each spring, so the two courses play best as part of a stay and play package. Confirm tee time access and rates directly before booking.
