Golf in Goa

Why golf in Goa

Goa is India's beach playground, a former Portuguese colony on the Arabian Sea where palm fringed sand, easy living and a relaxed Indo Portuguese culture have drawn travellers for decades. Golf here is not the headline, it is the elegant extra: a single seaside course in the south of the state lets a beach holiday gain a round or two without ever feeling like a golf tour. For the golfer travelling with a family or a partner who wants the sun rather than the fairways, Goa is close to ideal, pairing a genuine links by the sea with everything else the coast offers.

Be clear eyed about the scale. Goa is a one course golf destination, centred on the international standard layout at The Lalit on Raj Baga Beach in the far south, currently the only championship course open to visitors in the state. That makes it a destination for a relaxed round in a beautiful setting rather than a multi course pilgrimage. Treat the golf as a highlight of a wider trip, and Goa rewards you with sea views from the tee, warm winters and outstanding value.

The zones

South Goa

The quieter, more refined half of the state and the home of its golf, where The Lalit and the long, calm beaches of Canacona, Palolem and Colva suit a slower, resort focused stay.

North Goa

The lively heart of the beach scene, around Calangute, Baga and Anjuna, full of restaurants, markets and nightlife. No golf of its own, but the base many visitors choose for the buzz.

Beyond Goa

For golfers wanting more rounds, Goa pairs well with the wider Indian golf scene reached by short flights, so a beach week here can extend into a longer subcontinent trip.

Where to play

The one course every golfer comes to Goa to play, an international standard 9 hole links laid out by Col KD Bagga right on Raj Baga Beach, with multiple tee sets so it plays as a full 18 to a par of 72 across some 6,300 yards. Gentle, natural and meandering, with the Arabian Sea always close, its signature is the par 5 ninth, nicknamed The Cliffhanger, which asks for a tee shot over a cliff that drops to the sea.

The course sits within The Lalit Golf and Spa Resort, so it is most easily played as a resort guest, with practice facilities and an academy on site. It is the only championship golf in the state, and a relaxed, scenic round rather than a stern championship test.

Getting there and around

Goa is reached by direct international flights from the Gulf and connecting flights from across India and beyond into the Manohar International Airport at Mopa in the north, with the older Dabolim airport in the centre also serving the state. The golf and the quieter beaches lie in the far south around Canacona, roughly 90 minutes to two hours from the northern airport, so factor the transfer into a southern stay. A driver is the easy way to get around, since distances between north and south are longer than the map suggests and the coastal roads are slow.

Where to stay

For a golf focused stay, basing at or near The Lalit in the south puts the course on the doorstep and the long, calm beaches of Palolem and Patnem within reach. Visitors after the livelier scene tend to stay in the north around Calangute and Baga, but that puts a two hour drive between bed and the first tee, so most golfers prefer the south. Let one planner line up the resort, the transfers and the tee times as a single trip, and pair the golf with the beach, the food and the spa.

Goa golf questions

Is there golf in Goa?

Yes, though it is limited. The headline course is the 9 hole links at The Lalit Golf and Spa Resort on Raj Baga Beach in South Goa, an international standard layout with multiple tees so it plays as a full 18, and currently the only championship course open to visitors in the state. Golf in Goa is best treated as a fine complement to India's most famous beach holiday rather than a multi course tour in its own right.

When is the best time to play golf in Goa?

The dry season from November to March is the prime window, with warm, sunny days and low humidity that suit both golf and the beach. April and May are very hot, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain that makes golf difficult. The Christmas and New Year peak is the busiest and most expensive stretch. Always confirm conditions before you travel.

How much does golf in Goa cost in 2026?

Goa is excellent value. Indicative 2026 green fees at The Lalit run from roughly US$30 to $70 for a round, with resort guests often able to add golf to a stay. A week combining a beach resort, the golf and transfers is modest by international standards. Prices change, so always confirm directly before booking.
